Transmission problems (axle shaft) (SOLVED!)

Hi there...

Well, I knew there was something wrong with the axle or something, but today it got worse.

Every time I turn the steering wheel (while i'm driving) I hear this sound on the left side, which I think in english means AXLE SHAFT. It's the TIP of the AXLE in order words.

It's like, a roaring sound kinda of a "crunk crunk crunk", like, everyone on the street looks at the car, how embarassing.

I don't even want to drive it, jeez...

Any clues?....

Since nobody knows...

Does anyone know if the axle of the Volvo 440/460 (GLE, GLT, Turbo) is the same as the 480 turbo? (or only the turbo version?)

It's not a sort of creaking noise that happens particularly on full lock is it? A quick and easy thing to check is that the bump-stops for the suspension are properly lubricated. This is often missed on servicing and I know that (on 440s at least) unlubricated bump-stops cause loud creaking on steering. If there's been no change in the way that your car steers or handles then I reckon this could well be your problem.

Hi Ed,

Thanks for your reply mate.

I doubt that the noise comes from the bump stops really, because the noise doesn't sound only on full lock. Sometimes, just by turning 10º to the left is enough for it to sound.
In addition, I also feel little 'hits' on the steering wheel...

Do you have PAS? Might be a problem with your pump if you're getting uneven resistance in the steering.

(I think the bump-stop creaking can happen throughout the steering range as well, often more noticeable at full lock and slow speed. You wouldn't notice any change in how your steering feels with this though.)

just like im above me says.......cv joint sounds very much like
not a massively hard job, and you can get kits to recondition the 'spiders' inside
(kind of like three bearings on running together on each piece?)

Here, a new axle shaft costs about 70€. Used one about 25€ (but you never know if it is in good condition or not)

I know GSF and euro car parts sell them but delivery to portugal might cost a bit, could try a local motor factors, or Volvo (could be expensive that though ;) ), alternatively get one from a breakers, just have a good look at it first to make sure its not buggered

Just checked and the CV joint is not losing grease or anything, so the problem is not lubrification.

I think it should be the bearings (spider alike :D) that gave up on life? lol

sure some drwho fan will post the pic of an exploded cv joint, and also even the volvo part numbers for the replacement bearings....

iirc theres three bearings per side, and the circlips to hold them on.....ive only ever done one once, and not on a volvo, although had the axel out to swap the clutch on the first 480, so know what it looks like!!

Bad diagnostic. It isn't the CV joint.

I've put both front wheels on stands (lifted them off the floor) and engaged 1st gear. Both wheels start spinning, but the one on the right stops after a bit, like, the car almost shuts down, and comes this smell from the wheel, and it doesn't seem to be FERODO or something.

Any ideas? Anyone had this problem? I hate to ride by "FOOT!" and the 480 is the only "method" of transportion that i have :(

When the bearings fail, the disks can grind against the caliper, causing a noise. With the car lifted off the ground, make sure there is no play in the wheel bearings.

Also check the driveshaft nuts, that hold the driveshaft into the middle of the wheel, if these are loose, then the wheel bearings can also be loose.

Hope that you find the problem.

While the car is raised, try to wobble everything, since you may find that something is loose. The anti roll bar links are also prone to making lots of noise when worn out.

If it's as bad a noise as you say then something should be easy to find.

It's also worth checking the gearbox oil level, and the colour of the oil. Drain the oil, and change it, or if it is nice and clean, filter it an put it back in. The oil should be golden and transparent in colour. Silver particles in the oil indicate bearing failure, yellow very fine particles are somewhat normal (normal wear from syncromesh), although if it's enough to make the oil cloudy, then change the oil.

If the oil has leaked out of the gearbox, then it's likely to be dead already.
