wheel bearings gone....brown trouser moment

Post by robkendall » Sat Jan 28, 2006 7:35 pm

going home at lunch last night (12hr night shifts), went round a roundabout, and instead of turning, the car just went in a straight line!!!

took the gypsy crusher (4x4) back to work, and had a look at the 480 today....both front wheels were loose....thought that the hub nut might have come loose....was plagued with that problem on the blue S.
wasnt.....took the hubs off, and both bearing races had basically disintegrated!!!
trip to GSF, hour later....me smiling again!!!!
(25 quid + vat EACH!! am i just a tight arsed yorkshire man, or is that steep?)

didnt seem to be any scoring or anything in the hubs.....shafts look ok, no detritus or bits of metal hangin around, so hopefully no more probs for a while
stuck the nuts back on, and used some industrial thread lock that the brother in law uses on plant machinery....

cheers steveo

yeah, they came out easily enough, as they had practically disintegrated....i had a nice piece of scaffolding pipe ready too!
just knocked the bits left in out with a hammer/screwdriver.....there really wasnt much left of them!
i figure i had about 1 inch play on the wheels by the time i got home (ie i jacked up the front end and wobbled the wheels....top of wheel moved that much!)

im wondering if something else is going though, cos im getting slippage round round abouts now.....just been home for me lunch, come to rbout, normally can go straight over at approx 50, got half way round, and started to lose the front end again!!
seems to be when i steer to the left, the car drifts to the right.
theres no sudden jerking, the cars settled on the suspension etc, it just seems to get to a point, then slide.
any ideas?
tyres are *ok* theres plenty of tread on em....
