Wishbone...

Post by Dan the 480 Man » Sun Oct 23, 2005 11:17 pm

You may have read in the general post, i twatted my car against the kerb. Bodywork is all ok (thankgod), but the steering is...well, fooked to say the least. Here's a brief rundown...http://volvo480.northernscum.org.uk/for ... php?t=8264

When i got the drivers wheel off (the tyre burst), i had a look under with my mates torch. The subframe, at this time, *appears* to be ok, but the wishbone looks a little worse for wear. It's the triangular shape thing, correct? Well, where the passenger side seems to be flat and level, the drivers side is pointing down. It actually made the incredibly pathetic 'space saver' wheel point in a little at the bottom.

The power steering seems to be ok-ok as in, you can hear it swishing about when i turn the wheel-but steering the car is like trying to steer it with no power steering. It's heavy and jerky, like when you steer the car without the engine running, but a little lighter. The splash guard is all un-damaged and there's no kind of fluid leaking anywhere-no oil/water/brake fluid or power steering fluid loss. Touchwood, the car isn't making any funny noises either-although when i steer its quite squeaky.

Once again, i'm just shitting myself and praying there's no hidden damage. If it is just the wishbone, are these expensive to buy? Replacing it doesn't look a problem, looks pretty straight forward.

Anybody else done anything similar and had a similar outcome? Just don't want my car to be fooked completely.

Any help appreciated,
Dan :(

Have a good look at the trackrod, trackrod end and ball joint. A bent track rod seems quite possible if the wishbone is out of shape.

Nothing too expensive and all reasonably easy to fix. The only thing you can't do easily yourself will be getting the tracking set once it's all back together.

Good luck...

make sure you havent bent the driveshaft Dan, i did the exact same thing in my first car once upon a time (a polo) and it was never the same again unfortunately! the brakes will shudder under braking and you'll get vibration at speed if you have bent it, they are usually pretty tough though! i really did hit the kerb though going round a corner about 30mpg when i came upon a recently added traffic *ahem* 'calming' kerb that wasnt there the last time i turned into that road! bloody council, grrr, they've just stuck a speedbump right outside my house too!

good luck!

Well, i've just phoned Braydon Motors and they've quoted me £60 with delivery which is quite good. Got to get it ordered now and pray that thats the only problem.

The real shit thing is that i'm going to have to wait until Thursday for a day off to fit it! The anticipation is killing me! :cryhard:

60 for one side?

Don't forget to unbolt the lower part of the shocks. Otherwise your never get the wishbones back in.

My mate is a mechanic and he had alook the night it happened, and he said all i need to take off is the 3 bolts holding it on...

only cos i havent had to do anything oil/power steering related to it yet, my 480 likes to keep its oil in the sump and not plastered over the engine bay/underside of the bonnet!

With two 480's I'd expect you to know more. It's not leaked anymore since but I think it might have been when the boost pipe blew up and cause the engine to become upset. it

Well, thats not turned out as well as i had hoped.

My Dad was feeling quite well today, and he fixed my wishbone. It's on, all in the correct place and with no problems.

However-here are the new symptoms. The wheel is not buckled and the tyre is absolutley fine. But, when driving the car, it now constantly wiggles when you pick up speed. It almost feels the same as when the car 'snakes' when you pull away hard, like the wheels are fighting to get infront of each other. But now it does it constantly. My Dad looked at the driveshaft and that is fine.

One thing he did notice is the gaps in the arches. On the drivers side, you can squeeze 4 fingers into the gap between the rear of the front arch and the tyre, but on the passenger side, same place, you can only squeeze 3 in. Now i know, that just by having the tracking done, this won't cure it.

So, going to test your brains again people! I have two things in mind as to what could be causing this, but i want to see if anybody else say's it too.

Oh, and the steering is fine until you centralise it, then it goes quite stiff. And it doesn't pull itself to the centre after turning either.

I'm getting slightly more nervous now-and the car is def. un-driveable :cryhard:

Heres a pic. of the gap i mean. Drivers side i can squeeze 4 fingers in here, but passenger only 3 fingers-so obviously something has shifted...

I hope I'm wrong but, bent subframe?

Or possibly a bent strut, but I can't see that moving the wheel back in the arch

Well I had similar accident. Start with new subframe. I think it's not a big cost in UK (I mean used one). The problem is that place where subframe is attached to chasis can be bent. But if you've got a garage it's worth trying to swap subframe.

I agree with milosz, start with a new subframe.....but when edd parked his in the ditch, one wheel was further back than the other, and this was caused by the downward pointing turrets that the subframe bolts onto being pushed backwards.......

It will be the rear wishbone slot on the subframe. This tends to crumple.

The only way to cure this is with a new subframe.
