k...know how to get wheel nuts off which are sheared....well my locking nut's crome vanadium 'key' part has broken...is there a way to remove the wheel+disk without undoing the nuts?

Any other ideas?

you can sometimes hammer a socket over the nut and get it off that way.

Another way is to just undo the whole hub assembly to get the wheel off.

I've managed to get locking wheel bolts out by nudging them round with a chisel (being careful not to hit the wheel ;-))

Kind of depends on the type of head on the bolt whether this works or not.

You could always weld the head of a 19mm bolt on top and use that to remove it...

ring an independant tyre company, most of them carry the removal tool, we charge £10 to remove a broken locker.

have to charge as the head of the tool has to be replaced after everk couple of cars

If you have the locking wheels nut make and number which is normally on the socket then you can go to a wheel shop and ask for a new one. I did this at my local wheel shop and they charged me £5 for a new socket.

Well i was drunk when i wrote this, so it wasn't very clear...the separate key part is fine....its the chromevanadium tip of the actual wheel nut which broke....stupid of me to use the work key...

Anyway got some "locking wheel nut extractor" sockets on order...left handed taper thread...

cheers tho.

ok, i know this is late but its another good way to remove a broken locking nut.

i had this happen to an 850.

basically start with a small drill bit and drill through the middle of the bolt, then increase bit size and keep drilling the hole. when you get to a size that is near the size of the threaded part of the bolt, dont go all the way down. keep going bigger until you take the head of. you can then get the wheel of and get a good grip on the remaining stud/stump.

very simple and easy-ish process that wont damage you rim if done carefully.

note: hardened drill bits will help, and be liberal with the cutting fluid.

or a socket (hex) to the same size as the locking nut, hammer in and undo.

in my case i did try that but would not grip onto the volvo ones as part of the outer wall had come off and the socket couldnt grip, also could get the socket deeper back onto an unbroken part as the bolt hole was tapered.

did the 480's use genuine volvo locking nuts, or the 3 hole things you get from the market?

Real volvo ones
