2 Questions....

Post by Dan the 480 Man » Fri Jul 01, 2005 9:05 am

Hey guys...

Numero Uno. I had my tyres changed a few weeks back-all is good well, but with one exception. Ever since it's been done, the drivers side front wheel is now giving a constant squeak. It's a trifle embarrasing-makes my car sound pants! I've jacked her up to see if there is any play in the front wheel but there is none! One thing i have noticed though is that when i brake it goes away. Never encountered this before-i want to sort it but i don't know how! :cryhard:
Any ideas?

Secondly. She's been lowered 40mm on Avo springs, but i'm still on standard shocks. Since my GF has been driving  , i've been watching her drive up the road and have noticed that the car seems to roll an awfull lot around corners....sometimes i think the wing mirrors are going to touch the floor! Can anybody recommend a set of shocks that may help cure this? I don't mind the ride being a bit harder 'cos it's a Volvo so it's comfortable anyway. I just don't like it nearly taking off when i go over a bump! I don't want anything majorly expensive, just something thats not spongey. Somebody has mentioned before that i need shocks with a certain rebound on them to counter-act the springs. Is this right? What ones should i go for? I don't want any that will make the car sit higher either....if anything a little lower would be better.

Whats everybody else using?
Cheers guys!

Dan

1) Grease the edge of the brake pads with copper grease.

2) Standard shocks are too soft and have too long a travel to work effectively with lowering springs.

You need shortened shocks. Koni spring to mind but they are expensive.

I do believe the are Avo, Bilstein another supplier who do cheaper versions.

Out of that lot i'd go for Bilstein Sport (German engineering ;) ) try Euro Car Parts.

NOOOOoooooooooooooo!

Grease the back! Also file the edges of the pad to soften the angel until they bed in. Greasing the sides is not a good idea, try it on a bike wheel first if you don't believe me.

Also, sometimes there are anti-squeal things between pad and caliper (like a very thin piece of shim steel), check and make sure there should/should not be one, and then check your car.

Good luck!

Pretty sure thats what Jamo meant, but it could easily have been misinterpreted with catastrophic results.

I did give him credit!!

As i said, pretty sure he meant to say grease the back, but somone with little/no mechanical knowledge might take it literally, and grease the edges.

the 'back' of the pad is the metal part that sits in the caliper...ie the exact opposite side to the brake pad material that touches the disc....in fact, dont get any kind of foreign body on the brake pad material at all, front/sides etc....NONE of it!!

I should imagine any form of foreign body would be quite messy
I might grease the other sides just to see what it's like, for future reference!

The exact opposite is what i thought....i just like to get things clear before i have a go and bugger things up!

Cheers guys!
