knocking from rear suspension

Thanks..I have had the exhaust checked recently, and it seems to have been mounted properly. My gut feeling is that the sound comes from the actual suspension at the rear of the car.

Antiroll bar drop links (S shaped) these can wear out and make a knocking noise.

Thanks for your reply.I will check this out. The rattling knocking sound that I hear suggests that this could be the culprit. How do you check if worn? see if there is any movement when grasped or levered perhaps. Any suggestions welcome.

We had a wheelbearing out on the ES, sounded much like you describe. Wasn't doing any harm (aside from mentally) so we left it be. That said that car had so many other rattles it was almost in tune enough to be pleasant when the sub wasn't firing.

Thanks..
Yes, I have been ignoring it for some time, especially as I have had more pressing problems(dodgy diff bearing) to sort out..
Trouble is even my wife has now noticed it, so I think thwe time has come to investigate further.
Will keep posted.. Pete.

Sounds good advice. I will order the parts from Volvo at the earliest.
Many thanks for your suggestion.

Might be possible that you 'bumbstops' are knackered.
One they replaced the 'old' ones at the rear of mine the 'knocking' stopped.

That sounds very much like the rear anti-roll bar links.

To check... Have someone rock the car from side to side, and watch the bearing part of the link, if it moves then it's in need of replacement.

Be carefull when removing them if the bolts are tight. The brakets they bolt to are only spot welded to the car. Too much force and they will fall off.

Anti-roll bar links replacement. I wonder how much Volvo would charge me for doing this?

You can do it yourself, it's a really easy job.

All you need are two 17mm spanners.

Of all the 6 volvo 480's i've had i have never found one that did'nt need new rear shocks, the ones i just took of my two tone had not rusted but had done 130,000 miles !!!!!!!!

and if they don't get replaced they start hammering the bushes and links.
