damn hub nuts!

Post by robkendall » Wed Feb 16, 2005 7:25 pm

could one of you high priests please consult the great oracle V'dis and see if he knows what the torque settings should be on the front hub nuts.
i am totally fed up of my passenger one working loose.....if i tighten it right up (and i mean tight) the the wheel doesnt freewheel v well....if i slacken it off a bit, guaranteed it will work loose within a week.
am going to torque it up to the correct tension, the braze the damn thing on....should be enough to hold the nut, yet be easy enough to heat/melt off if i need to.

(ps...i will set my own oracle up one day murf....promise!)

They are supposed to be done up extremely tight. 220NM more than most 1/2" drive torque wrenches go up to.

Hope that helps

fk! so that mean if me bouncing on a scaff poled bar tight makes the wheel tight....220nm is gonna pretty well lock the damn thing up.
wheel bearing issue me thinks?

Also don't forget that it's meant to be replaced every time it's undone.

the ones on mine, when fitted have been whacked on 2 opposing nut faces with a chisel, it forces the inside of the nut against the drive shaft and locks it in place, theres a name for this but i cant remember it!

Chris and i have taken more drive shafts on and off than i can remember.... turbo conversions and stockcar racing...i don't believe we've ever used new nuts, although Chris may correct me on this... We only had one come loose once on a stockcar and that was probably due to exteme duress!!! :D tightened it back up and wasn't a problem again.

Had the same problem for ages everyone sunday morning down to the garage to tighten them back up then every saturday night they would come loose again. But then one day went to another garage and he used a scaffolding pole to tighten them up and they havn't come loose since. (when i was having them done before he did use an air gun and a touque wrench). Shamir

i believe they are a crush nut, so once removed/loosened they should be replaced, could also use a nylock hubnut?

Edd came up with the theory yesterday that if yuo didn't do it up tight enough the first time, the movement could have worn the hub, or the hub/driveshaft splines, so now doing it up tightly enough still doesn't work because it has enough play to loosen itself?
