Removing the steering wheel for replacement

Post by coyote1980 » Sat Jan 29, 2005 10:52 am

Hi,

I just received a leather original-480 steering-wheel and want to remove the normal steering wheel. Is it just a matter of removing the nut inside the steering wheel, pulling it out, putting the new one in place and tightening the nut again?

Do I have to put the steering wheel in anti-lock position or something? Or are there any other things to take into account? Thanx!

Yes, pull off the horn button (disconnect battery first as it's still live with ignition off), then just undo the big nut. I wouldn't have the steering locked; you might break the lock when you apply torque. Easier with 2 people, one to hold the wheel while you undo the nut. Mark the position of the wheel so you get the new one on in the same position.
Cheers, Chris.

The steering lock doesn't seem to interfere on these cars but probably best to have it unlocked. Usually best to use some threadlock. My new momo worked loose recently.

BTW the torque setting should be 60 Nm. 44 ft.lb.

Hi Daniel, if you find your steering wheel is off centre after you fit it, read Chris's second post from the top on how to get the wheel stright again

Thanx all!

Now all I need is a tool that fits the bolt inside the steering wheel :D

Have asked some family if they have tools big enough for this bolt, otherwise I'll just buy one.

Its only a smallish one. When i was about to do mine i grabbed a 30 and a 32 (size of the 240's wheel nut) and then had to go back for something considerably smaller! (I cannot for the life of me remember what size it is though)

The size of the nut is 24mm (from side to side). Heck, a wheel-nut thingy might do the trick! I'll have a look at it tomorrow, great tip!

How important is it not to put too much pressure on the nut when tightening it? Can I do it just "as tight as I get it" or should I finally buy a momentum-tool where I can adjust the amount of torque before the tool slips? (sorry, I really have no idea how to call that tool, hope you know what I mean...) ;)

If you don't have a torque wrench, just do it up so its bloody tight, unless you put a bar on there or you're superman you won't strip the nut.
If however you fancy getting a torque wrench anyway, you could try it out then.

Wedge the steering wheel in place with your knees, or have someone hold onto it. I wouldn't recommend using the steering lock to do it, if you damage that you're in trouble.

Thanx!

Now all I have to do is find a cheap torque wrench, since it's just for occasional use it doesn't have to be industrial strength :)
