Panhard Rod compatibility?

Post by VanDerGraaf » Fri Jan 21, 2005 12:26 am

Unfortunately, as i was driving home in what was atex61's 1988 ES, i spun her on a roundabout and she bashed the kerb. :cryhard:

Result: 1 fuct Avior alloy.
1 very bent Panhard Rod.
1 annoyed and bemused VanDerGraaf.

So the question is: will the phr from other 400 series cars fit? Much easier to find a 440, for example, in a scrappy.

Seem to remember Matbat having some "trouble" with his panhard rod too ;) , searched for that but can't seem to find it on our new "improved" site.... :?

Well, should be, those with the volvo lowering kit come with a shortened one, but i doubt you'll come across one like that.

I feel very guilty for having probably killed a 480! :badmood: The alignment of the rear wheels doesn't look right to me. Still seems to drive ok though. Bit of screeching from the rear on full lock in one direction.
Subframe knackered?
Murf wants a picture up as he reckons it's up there with the state of Matt's after his prang....

Still, 6 months of pottering around and driving lessons for Kate till the MOT.
Not bad for £100. And i finally get a spoiler for my Turbo! :hopping:
And a very nice os rear cluster! Yes, my Turbo has reason to be cheerful!

So, how fast were you going to spin a 480 on a roundabout?

he was going pretty slow, i watched it happen in slow mo in my mirror!!
dunno what happened as it wasnt slippy, i tried to get the tail out on my MR2 on the same roundabout to test how slippy it was and it just stuck fast. went sideways on every other roundabout though, even without trying!

its not his turbo this happened to, he bought marks (atex61) old ES for his GF to learn to drive in and we were taking it back to glasgow after picking it up!

oh, and if anyone has a single spare avior rim lying around......

Were the tyres ok on the car? I had a slow puncture on my S and slid out a couple of times when turning right. It turned out not only was there a nail driven through my rear left tyre, it was like a slick too, you could see the wire!

Sounds like you might have done the axle as well then mate.

Yes all 400 share the same panard rod. Unless it has a towbar

tyre was fine, theres a few 440's in the scrappy round here, ive a feeling one of them might soon become an organ donor!!
i dont think the axle will be damaged as the crushed wheel and bent PH rod must have absorbed all the (small) impact force. plus is there anything on the axle you can really damage, its just a hollow beam is it not??

The stub axle, would have taken a huge amount of bending force, mine was bent after my incident.

Matt i know this sounds silly but is this difficult to sort?
It's awkward for me as i'm just learning and i don't have the good old Dr Who system, so it's difficult to visualise things...

I gues you could use one from another axle, though I think replacing the whole rear axle, trailing arms etc from the doner car might be your best option, this is what I did. It also means you can leave part of the panhard rod attached to the axle and swap the whole lot over, the brake calipers you just unbolt and rebolt onto the carriers on the replacement axle.

It saves a lot of work and disturbs less bushes and things.

That makes sense.
The towing kit has a longer than standard panhard rod....
Now why would that be?

My 480 has a Volvo installed towing kit, and I've got a spare from a scrapped 440. maybe I should bring out the tape measure?

its got a longer panhard rod to keep the rear axle in the same place in relation to a car without the towing pack. the towing pack has longer and stiffer spring which raise the height of the rear of the vehicle therefore the PH rod needs to be longer :D

As Murf says the towing pack has taller springs, so is the oposite of the lowering kit. The longer rod is required to make the axle center on the body of the car.
