Front shocks warning!

Post by dabac » Thu Dec 30, 2004 7:28 am

I've just replaced my front shocks, and while the shocks themselves didn't look too bad the top mounting plates were just about gone!

The rubber pad that the top of the shock is bolted to had worked itself loose both from the mounting plate and brom the center bushing. I honestly don't know what kept the shock from torpedoing straight through the bonnet.

So even if your shocks arent that bad and you weren't planning on replacing them, have a look at your mounts.

this is quite a commom problem with people who drive mainly in town/cities. This is to due to the vast amount of pot holes and speed bumps we have to content with every day.

When ever you change your shocks you should always change the top amounts as well. They cost around 35 pounds from the dealer.

Does anyone know id that is that £35 each, or both?

Mine are looking a bit ropey,
If i push down on the car, you can see the centre of the strut, with the plastic cap on it, move up and down..the rubber stays where it is.... does this mean its shot?
Can hear knocking coming from the front at low speeds over bumps.

just looked on eurocarparts and they want £45 for one side and £37 for the other

Think it'll have to carry on knocking for a while!! Else i shall see if i have any decent ones lying about.....

mine are knocking when i go over pot holes sometimes. Aint sure if it is the sussy or the anti roll bar. Am thinking the anti roll bar as when i go over a pretty bumpy patch the steering wheel moves from left to right slightly.

Are these pads all round? cos if they are i will get all four done and the roll bars.

part no

Post by V480TI » Thu Jul 28, 2005 8:33 pm

Somebody knows the part no for a 1991 volvo 480 turbo.
After reading the story's I went to Volvo and ordered a pair.
But now I am not sure if I have ordered the correct ones.

In a week I get new yellow Koni's and I want to be sure everything is oke .

Also the rubber things that are fitted in the triangular metal piece (wishbone????) where parts click in, can they be worn out or broken ??
If I look at it, it seems little parts of those rubber bushes are gone.

Greetz and thanks

Hausser front and rear bumper, Black Diamond sport clutch, lightened flywheel, flowed head.Audi TT recirc.Stainless Cat replacement, K&N airfilter,Magnecor KV85,NGK colder plugs.
Soon ; Audi/VW calippers, 280mm Renault Sport brake discs and Ferodo DS2500 pads.

Thay do wear out, but are quite reasonable from volvo (£40 all four) aren't that hard to change providing the bolts aren't seized in, and make a big difference to the handling.

When changing my starter, my top mounts are looking much worse now- one looks torn
Cars turning into a bit of an expense at the moment, what with a warranty claim on a brand new tyre going on, and me having to pay up front for a replacement......

replacements

Post by V480TI » Thu Jul 28, 2005 10:09 pm

When I looked on the screen of the computer at my Volvo dealer I saw that I ordered some round rubber things, to be placed under where normally nuts (some cars other) are screwed on in the engine hood to hold the complete shock assembly.

Hope it is clear enough, but have I ordered the right thing ????

I'd be very carefull about posting stuff like that on public forums as you leave yourself and forum open to liable action for copyright infringements.

On other forums i frequent the said car programs are given nicknames to get around this.

Quite a few car fourms have had letters from the manufacturers on this.

Just a friendly warning.
