Squeaky Steering

Post by Big Brother » Sun Oct 17, 2004 7:31 pm

When I turn a slight corner usually left I can hear a constant squeaking coming from somewhere under the bonnet. I don’t have a clue what it is and as it only does it when the car is moving.

Can anyone help me?

Cheers

it could possibly be the brakes?
i have a problem with mine that they squeak all the time.
i think its just vibrations on the discs, from the pads.
some cars you can get shims etc.
my s40 only does it going around corners...so thinking it could be that?

Is it a squeak or a whine? If it's a wine, check the level of powersteering fluid. Could be that there's air in the hose if the level is too low. (that was my problem)

I had new back brake pads and a caliper fitted last week, brakes are fab, as is the hand-brake now, but I now have a squeaky wheel ( I think a front one; garage checked the front brakes, said they were fine)...... the squeaking started a few days ago just after I got the car back from the garage.

I've checked for wayward rodents, but none were to be found ;) ........

If I accelerate hard the squeaking disappears, if I'm rolling along I hear it, and when I apply the brakes it stops.
Is this a "good gawd woman, get yourself to a garage without delay" situation or is it nothing to worry about? :?

Oh!!

I just paid £280 for my MOT and had 4xnew discs and 4xnew pads and 4x bushes.

It squeeked a bit before - now it squeeks loads more!! I'm gonna get my man to look at it after payday - he said it shouldn't be the brakes.

I've had the handbrake cables adjusted up loads and one side is sticky. He says both the cables need replacing but he just bodged it for the MOT (he knows i am skint)

The squeeking gets worse after using the handbrake - maybee the handbrake is pulling the discs a bit even when its set to off?

Will update when he's had a good look.

Big bro, it could be a wheel bearing?

sally-sal, try pulling the handbrake on a bit when its squeaking. Should then find out if its front or back brakes that are squeaking. My rears squeeked for ages when first fitted. Frequent adjusting on the rear calipers seems to fix it for a while.

no fluid--- bet that was fun :)

If brakes are squeaking and errent rodents are not to blame then you must ask yourself why you do not keep a family of small furry things within your nice warm engine bay - its a charitable act that I encourage all to perform! :D

Try copper-greasing the back of the pads - some garages don;t bother when they change pads coz they're lazy - but this may only fix you if your squeaking is as you apply brakes...

Try running the car in an <empty> car park and killing the engine then steer - as you no longer have power-steering you will be able to see whether its that causing the squeak <and how heavy the steering is without the hydraulic assistance!!>

Ok..

Thought i'd post here as opposed to opening a new thread. I also seem to be suffering a whine-type of noise when i turn left. The powersteering fluid is fine, and the brakes and stuff aren't new so thats wiped out those areas. Did anybody cure theirs?
