clip /clamp on power steering hose

Post by Alan 480 » Thu Jun 22, 2017 5:53 pm

Odd question but noticed a slight leak from the rubber hose / connector for the power steering pipe, ( attention drawn due to one drop of oil on drive in a location that wasn't from gearbox seal on SS1 ! ) the connection is on drivers side just beside the drive shaft.

I can't for the life of me remember if this was swaged and the metal work has fallen off, due to age, or was it always just a 'push-fit' obviously it must be on the return leg as otherwise there would be a huge puddle :-)

looking at the 'sketch' in HBOL there appears to be a fitting, but maybe not . . .. .

I can easily add a 'jubilee' but if not then not required :-)

I'm fairly certain it's a swaged fitting....

Degrease the whole area just in case it's dripping down from somewhere else

Edit: Swaged, not staged! stupid autocorrect

wiped things down last night so will see today.

not sure what a 'staged' fitting is?

mine just looks like a piece of rubber pipe!

two steel pipes pushed in one from each side?

mine looks a little leaky too, so might have to do some investigations of my own!

Top man :-)

Well spot of investigation today revealed 'most' of the oil was an accumulation of what had run down the back of the block and found it's way onto the hose.

so nowt to be concerned about, yes my hose sections all look like those , but now with a bit less engine oil

whilst in there investigating, cleaned off rust from bottom of sump, cleaned with hammerite rust remover and gave it a coat of winfields finest gloss black paint, I bought it when doing up the Regal about 30 years ago and still seems OK!!

PS the hose clip to sub-frame doesn't fix to anything and my sub-frame is 'somewhat' rusty, even looking to remove it with engine held from above, give it a darn good clean (maybe shot blast) and re-install, or source a better one?

that's because its from an era when we could put proper chemicals into it. The modern equivalent probably wouldn't even stick...
