Volvo 480 Club Europe

I had the front shocks, subframes and ball joints replaced as things were feeling a bit tired.

There now seems to be a bit a of play in the steering around the straight ahead when going from one direction to the other - say when going round a roundabout on a dual carriageway.

Any ideas of the cause of what else I might need to replace?

By sub frames I assume that you mean the front suspension arms.

If the tyre pressures etc are ok then I would look at tracking.

Still as a quick check jack up the car and put it on axle stands then with both wheells off the ground check whether there is any play in the steering rack.

Front wishbones and ball joints.

Difficult to describe but it feels both lighter and stickier when going back through the straightahead position.
I'm always spot on with the tyre pressures, but am putting on two new tyres next week for the winter when it goes in for a central exhaust section, so will get the tracking checked as well.

Re the steering rack
- Are they known to wear or do they just break ?
- Are there serviceable 'bits' ?

the system can leak.
a visual is easily done.
oh you can check steering column as well.

I would suspect there are no user replaceable parts other than seals/plugs

As a final thought....

Possibly change pow str. fliud as it might be degrading.

oh if your rack is on the way out I know a man with a spare rack:D

PAS fluid is a good idea. Tracking now set to toe in properly - seems better so far. (30deg?)
