funny noise from frontdrivers side

Post by robkendall » Thu May 20, 2004 11:54 am

been told it might be the drive shaft.
started a day or two ago, kind of like a grumbling droning sound, when i when i trun left.
now its doing it all the time.
thought it might be a wheel bearing, but not sure

More likely to be a bearing than a shaft I'd have thought - see if you have any play on the wheel by jacking it up off the floor and grabbing it and wobbling it

Jack it up (and fast!) It might be dangerous to drive. If the wheel wobbles also check if the wheel bolts are tightly screwed in. It may sound crazy but i once had 4 screws that were halfway on their way out!

thanks guys,
me missus came home in it just now....first thing i checked was wheel nuts...they were ok, secondly hub nuts.
the passenger side hub nut had almost completely unscrewed, giving about 4mm of play in the drive shaft.
have tightened it and it runs ok....dont think its damaged the bearing.
why oh why are they not castleated (ie wiva split pin through!!)
I always assume the worst....took about five mins to fix.....i would have stripped the cv joints and every thing before checking the simple stuff!!!
thanks again

I think Volvo advise you to use a new nut on each application. :x
If I were you I get some locking compound on that thread...!

out of interest, and in case they are national (dont know if they are), theres a company near me called city seals and bearings.
they have matched the hub nuts, but they are 'nylock', ie they have a ring of nylon around the top few threads ,which locks the nuts.
the torque and load settings are all equivalent, and they were 1.50 quid each.

have replaced them with these nuts....hopefully they wont unscrew again!!
