knocking coming from o/s rear
hi all
have got a knocking coming from what sounds like rear o/s. its not a consistant knocking.
just had her MOT'd, and had new wheel bearings and a new ball joint fitted. just wondering if any of you old hands have got any idea's as to what it could be?
like i say it is more of a thud - not rythmatic just occurs on uneven/bumpy roads.

no, i think the only ball joints are at the front.
there are linkage arms in the rear though that can cause that sort of problem.
do you have a turbo? due to the turbo having a bigger exhaust it often bangs on the crossmember as it passes over the rear axle.
it does it on my car and i had to finely adjust it to get it to stop and replace the rubber donut things in the middle of the car as they support the exhaust too.
check this first, even if you dont have a turbo as your donuts might be missing!

i have a turbo and i had a massive exhaust problem. adjsuted it time and time again, even made an additional vertical damper, made out of a other volvo damper, and inox steel
it indeed "listenes very tight" not much play.
but still no results !
the x-es time i looked at it i accidently held the horizontal drag link and heard the same noice! Moral of the story, check the rear axle rubber bushings... (not seen at mot !)

cheers for all the ideas guys.
@volvofox, would the rear axle rubber bushings make the noise when the rear wheel goes over a bump? was wondering as after a few laps of local safeway car park going over the speed bumps wasnt making noise every bump went over?
anyway will keep u posted

@ poster :
no, the noise wasn't always audible at all bumps. But on a real bad road it was an ongoing sound..just check play. piece of cake, maybe its not it.
@ althings :
i just swapped the horizontal drag link to another of a similar old car, checked if they looked alike (only the plastic handbrake cable bracket was improved by a simple steel one )
and no more rumble. So maybe your theory is right, but no solution, as proofed. (don't shout please)

Yes the things have been in the car for ages. I have got used to the noise now so it's not bothering me any more. I think it's time they where done though.
I wouldn't like to think what would happen if it let go while going round a roundabout at half throttle
The new engine is doing ok, so it was the injector for sure, since I'm now making more power than before.

If you're talking about the drop links to the rear sway bar/anti roll bar - dont worry. Some of the 440s don't even have one fitted. I have (unintentionally) only noticed that something was wrong with my drop links (front as well as rear) when they spontanously self disassembled on the road. At both those occasions I simply taped them up to stop them from rattling and drove home. If your shocks are in decent shape the drop links aren't critical.rpruen wrote: I wouldn't like to think what would happen if it let go while going round a roundabout at half throttle

I remember now, the mounting on the car body for the rear drop links are only spot welded on in two places. When we got my car, one of them was hanging off, and I welded it back on. (because I did it its not the prettiest welding, but its stayed there 2 years)
They tend to shear off on the track too.
