pulling to the left can be bad tracking, or worn bearings, worn shock, or... you get the picture :) - this whine you mention - is it definately from the steering, or could it be the wheel? Does it whine if you drive at some speed then depress the clutch (so you're coasting) and steer then? You might find you have a worn steering rack, which could also account for the pull as well as the whine.

Thank you for rapid replies. Had the tracking checked first it's fine. suspension and handling feels good so think shocks OK, which I suppose this means it is likely to be the most expensive problem! I boughtit as a one lady owner 40,000 miler so will be surprised if steering is wrong. however, it is the pump that whines in fact when stationary it nearly stalls engine when turning!

 that was awful, i will start again. it whines when stationary and turning the wheel. don't know if it whines when driving fast but it does make a bit of noise when driving normally. does not seem to pull much when cold. and does not make noise when cold either.

Well to me it sounds like the pump is on the way out. I would replace it now before it packs up altogether. If replacing the pump doesn,t stop it pulling then check the brake caliper isn't sticking.

I would check the brakes first before replacing any part.

Don't want to give you a bad feeling, the car might be pulling to the left due a previous accident... so yuo could have your car checked for misalignment of the wheels, this can be done at good car-reapirsshop.

I hope that you find the cause and good luck.

I know the feeling........
