Steering column play

Post by pol » Mon Jun 07, 2010 3:38 pm

Hi all, I have a slight knocking in the steering column. I believe it is a UJ on the column but have not had it to bits fully to check. I'm pretty sure it is inside the car and not on the steering rack or trackrods etc.

Is there a common part that wears out between the steering wheel and the bulkhead? If so, how easy is it to fit and does anyone have a spare?

Thanks,

pol

I could have a spare :D depending on part and whether you have an airbag steering wheel

I remember having this on one of my 480's. I didn't ever get round to fixing it before selling, and it was never an MOT issue, but I can confirm at least one other car to have had the same wear in the universal joint. I think it's a replacement column - I don't think (from memory) that the UJ comes off on it's own...

Thanks both. I thought it may have been mentioned before that it's a case of swapping the whole column (or easier at least).

Mine is non airbag - That's a Volvo / Momo steering wheel by the way  - So thankfully, no messing around with explosives in my face.

It was like this when I received the car, only slight and has been through an MOT before. I just think it may be worth doing.
