Suspension bushes discussion

Post by pol » Tue Mar 20, 2007 10:55 am

A few of us have been discussing the handling of the 480 and it has been noted that the wishbone bushes could be improved.

http://volvo480.northernscum.org.uk/for ... c&start=20

The standard bushes could play a major part in leaving the driver feeling detached from the road.

I remember catgroom and ben harris hunting around for polyurethane bushes before.

I'm on a bit of a mission with my suspension and handling at the moment so please add your comments!

Cheers

I was just wondering if theres any cars out there that

a)Have wishbones that fit our cars.

b)Already have poly bushes available for them...

Now how the fuck do I go about discovering the truth about this one ??

Yknow?Iam onto something,I just lack the savvy to take it a step further!!

Hmm, someone on here (forgotten who) fitted mondeo bushes to his 480 with a bit of adaptation.

Crap thing is he didn't say what year/phase of mondeo...

Surely you can get poly bushes for those?

I keep thinking that you probably don't want them to be too hard, just a little stiffer than the rubber ones.

So thats from a Ford Mondeo 93-96, dimensions 12x46x45 ? needforspeed.co.uk list some PowerFlex bushes, 46mm, 47mm dia, 54mm and 60mm.

yknot, what size tubing did you use between the arm and bush? Do you know the size of the Volvo 4xx front bushes?

PFF19-601 IS 46mm
PFF19-602 IS 54mm
PFF19-901 IS 47mm
PFF19-902 IS 60mm

I have a feeling the 54mm might fit?

I think you are on the right track there with the 54mm. 60 seems too big and 46/47 too small.

@ Yknot- Hi, sorry I forgot it was you and I was too lazy to search at the time!

hi :)
the mondeo bushes was picked between a lot of bushes on a local auto parts shop by comparison with the arm and the shape of the bush.
i don't know any more the exact dimensions.... the tube was made quick with no paper plans... important is it works perfectly.

These bush sizes are common to most Fords in the 90s, perhaps next time I'm in a scrap yard I'll have a look and compare to a Volvo wishbone.

yknot, I take it the dimensions of the inside of the bush was fine, needing no alterations?

480_rocket, inner dimensions are the same, only a few washers to obtain the height of the centre

Perhaps the std Ford Mondeo bush is stiffer then the 400-series one, because the Mondeo is a bit heavier.
