Steering rack is pretty much buggered!

Post by guitarcarfanatic » Tue Nov 21, 2006 9:29 pm

Hey guys,

My steering has always been rubbish for the first turn of the day. It's like it is locked in place and I have to give it a good shove each way in the morning to get it loose. After this it is fine except it will cause the engine to cut out occasionally on full lock but this may just be me not giving enough gas for the increased resistance. I have changed the power steering fluid and flused all the manky crap out and it is now super quiet and was fine for the first couple weeks but now it has gone back to it's usual self. I'm pretty certain this is going to keep getting worse so I think It's time the rack is changed. I can pick a good secondhand rack up no problem but what I want to know is, is it an easy change? Or am I going to go crazy doign it?

Any advice/instructions much appreciated!

Oh and the clutch needs replacing soonish so is this easier with the engine out of the way?

Its a bit of a fiddle to get it in/out, and it will take longer if you can't get teeh track rods off and have to cycle to the nearest town to order some new ones and then back, and then back to collect them again etc etc.

Lol. Do the track rods cost much? Might just buy some before hand before I do it. Just to be on the safe side.

Nah, about 15-20 quid.

If you are having the engine out, do it then. definitely.
