vented disks! but which calipers???

Post by RichT » Sun Jul 17, 2005 10:32 pm

Hi,
i want to put vented disks on my 95 480 turbo which has solid disks as standard.

I have been told that there are three types of calipers on the 480. two which will take the vented disks and one which wont.

How can I tell which ones i have fitted to my car and if I have the ones that won't except the vented disks is it a big job to change them over? :?

Just a thought, but a 95 Turbo should have vented discs, and TRACS as standard?

If so then maybe someone had solid ones fitted at some point (they are cheaper?).

Agree with richard, there's something not tight there. My guess would be a garage changed the discs for the non vented type.

I doubt someone would have gone to the effort of changing the calipers, so if solid discs would fit in the turbo calipers, you probably have the correct calipers already???

So my car should have vented disk fitted then? would these just be the front ones or all round?

My car does have TRACs (I think) but I dont think its working properly all the time.

Is it worth me phoning Volvo to find out if the car was originally fitted with vented disk?

Have you looked at the front disks to see if they do have the vented (disc/gap/disc) discs.

it's only on the front.

i think i am getting confused between vented disks and cross drilled disks here! so it could be my mistake.

just to clear this up vented are what looks like two disks together with a space in between them with the two joined in places by metal right?

Thats right.

As per your PM, If you have solid disks, you would need to find a car with vented to thieve the calipers etc from to upgrade with.

Drilled ones have a tnedency to crack from the holes, more for motorsport really.
I thought about it, but have heard tales of them even shattering.

Grooved ones are OK, I have some solid grooved ones.

I don't remember, I could find out if you want. someone said gsf or eurocarparts (not sure) sell them but I can't comment on that.

The discs I just ordered from GSF were brembo. I didn't know that when I ordered them. But they sell 2 types. The more expensive of the 2 are brembo.
