MOT failure :( BUT- brake hose movement ?

Just got the red sheet instead of the green one. :badmood:

Seems to have a failed on various small things that are easily fixed but there's a line about the brake hose that I don't really understand and the garage aren't explaining it well:

"nearside front brake hose has insufficient room to move, resulting in fouling on any part [3.6.B.a]"

Same for the offside hose too.

Does this mean the hose has lost its flexibility - is it distorted and snagging on something else like a suspension part ?
I've never heard of this before and the car has always sailed through its MOT before now.

I've been quoted £140 plus VAT to get it sorted and I want to be sure that it is absolutely necessary.

Any ideas ?

All sorted.

I'll post this anyway as it might come in useful.

Put the front wheels on full lock and checked each brake hose. They were rubbing slightly against the suspension strut, only slightly but after time it was sufficient to make that part of the hose shine.

Thankfully they were by no means damaged and the garage were able to manipulate them out of the way ( I guess I could have done this myself but they were retesting the car so I left it to them).

Not sure why they originally quoted £140 as the bill came nowhere near that, and they sorted all the other bits out.

For you technical geniuses on this forum who think nothing of changing a clutch in an afternoon this'll seem pretty tame but for those less technically minded (like me), it might be an idea just to check your front brake hoses periodically so that they're not fouling the suspension.
