adjusting the handbrake

Post by rs510e » Mon Jun 20, 2005 8:58 pm

ok it appears to be a common thing for the handbrake on a 480 to go loose. I took a look few weeks ago trying to find where to adjust it. I couldn't it so i was hoping someone could give me a brief idea of what im looking for and how to adjust it.

Hi,

you have to get under the car,
where the two cables run together ( right under the handbrake ) they´re hooked into a bracket and only one cable is going on to the handbrake. The one comming from the handbrake ends into a thread with which the cable could be strenghtened, shouldn´t be that bis problem :)

Regards

That doesn't make that much difference to be honest. You will need to adjust the adjusters on the rear calipers. Remove hex dust caps, adjust screw inside until slight resistance can be felt. replace dust caps. Do some handbrake turns.

There are 3 cables, the ones that go to the back wheels are the same as each other, but it seems there is a different part number for cars before and after 1990

Hi,

What's the deal with removing the handbrake cable? I got it out from the brake end but it's wont come out under the car. There is a clip and I removed it but the cable is still being held.

If I read that right you've got the back bit off and are trying to remove the front section? not absolutely sure but I think that bit comes out from inside the car, not underneath

There should be two clips, there's one on the trailing arm and then theres another one on the underbody a bit further forward on the cable, that should be all thats holding it in place

The only other thing I can think of is the exhaust heat shield is holding it somehow where the cable goes over it , try loosening it off or removing it and see if that does the trick, if that doesn't work then I'm stumped
