I had some black diamonds years ago on a little fiat and thought they were good until a mate bought some tarox 40 groove g88's these were awesomely good. EIther was an improvement over standard.
For the non ventilated there is always the ate power disc, which have a kind of a groove, but are very cheap.

A mate of mine had some Black Diamonds all round on his E-reg E30 3 series. (we fitted rear trailing arms off a 325 tourer ot get discs on the back)
They were relly good after being worn in gently for about 30-50 miles, and could really stop the car quickly. Until that is, we fitted some GreenStuff pads (can;t remember who makes them) then the whole lot went to pot, completley rubbish. Though I had GreenStuff pads on a race tuned Metro I used to own, on Red Dot discs and they were great.
Black Diamond and GreenStuff must just be incompatable or something, I'd go for the Red Dot / GreenStuff combo personally, if they are available.

New shocks sounds good, I know nothing about shocks, if they are good, bad or will fit etc What i will do is get the whole rear end looked at and decide what to do from there i think i need some bushes or something cos not only does it creek it clunks over big bumps not good im sure. Still handles well though.
Let me know which set of disks you go for and if they fit nice and i'll get some, also cost of volvo pads over say black dimonds or from halfruads? Ill come down to your kwik fit to get them fitted nice to have someone that knows how a 480 works near by.
As for the shims on the cam thingy i asked my machanic to check it but he said he couldn't hear anything wrong, but i know different it sounds to much like a deisel for my liking and its been getting worse. So im not sure what do aboot that
