I should be doing mine this weekend. Did them when I first got the car and dont remember having any problems other than the usual crappy locating screws. Just drilled them out and have never replaced them. I have 2 new ones now so may replace them if i can get the stubs out. If not... Bovvered innit!

Still need to get some pads, but which ones. I remember them being a lot cheaper... Should have bought the GSF ones when I ordered the discs. The discs came in a Brembo box but dont know what that means. I had ordered the cheaper ones but they have billed me for the next price up ones which doesnt really matter. They should have let me know though??

Volvo pads were £47 when I phoned today... Ferrodo down halfords seems resonable at about £24. Probably going to get them. Standard Halfrauds ones are £20 anyway.

Hmm, so it's not the same pads for solid/vented discs. Those are ATE calibers, what would be correct EBC code, DP989 (prolly this?) or DP838?

There are two different vented discs pads...Richard has the mahoosive ones on his car.
There are also two different non vented discs pads. I have the bigger of these two, which are £30ish, and I think are the same as the small type vented pads :? conusing stuff.......better check mine again actually....

Where should I get some pads from for front, vented, ATE type? Halfrauds lied to me again! They dont do these ones in standard or ferrodo.

Well guess what.....? Funking caliper bolts! Rounded innit.

Any tips? Dont really have the tools / space round here so may have to be a garage job. One of my disks is seriously grooved and the pad is more of a wavey shape than flat.

Seriously? Where can I pick some up from?? They look worth a shot. How much for a set? Cheers Chris.

Don't know where Edd got them from, they are made by IRWIN, which used to be RECORD, so its good quality stuff.

The starter kit doesn't have a big enough one for the (front ? whichever is the biggest ones...) caliper bolts though...

http://irwin.co.uk/stockists.htm

List of stockists...notice that Screwfix are pretty swift to deliver.

Chris

Another, more destructive method is to get a smaller size socket, and bash all hell out of it with a hammer, forcing it onto the bolt. Turn the wheel to full lock Then, using a long arm bar, with a bit of scaffold bar on it gradually apply progressive, gentle force to it, with an assistant wedging something against the socket to prevent any lateral movement that can cause the socket to cam-off. Hope that makes sense.

It does make sense, cheers. I feebly attempted to hammer on a 16mm onto the 17mm heads, but isn't much room under the arches to get too great a swing! May give it another go, but will probably wait till i'm back near my angle grinder and welder etc.

I'm liking the angle grinder + welded nut plan. Well i'm not really but it may have to be done...

I've had to cut off these nuts first time - rather irritatin!!
When they come off its a happy day mind - the last time I got them started on the way out by a garage with an air-impact driver - then carefully pottered home to get them off the rest of the way.
Still sheared my socket driver mind!
The locating screw won't come off without an impact-driver - just drill the fucker out its frikin useless.

Well, Lee/Myself fitted new discs and pads to the front of the V40 at the weekend. £90 all in. Bargain. And no rusted bolts in sight...

This is what one of those bolts looked liked a few hours after it decided to mess with me! I was so happy when it finally came out that i took a picture to always remember the moment by

I cut the rounded head into a square so i could fit a smaller ratchet on it. Lots of heat helped it too.

Right kids, just done mine.

I think all you need are the right tools.

Get yourself a blowtorch, a 17mm impact socket (with the flat sides) on a 1/2 drive to fit a long breaker bar.

Make sure you remove the caliper guide part to get proper access to the caliper bolts. Get new caliper bolts too.

Heat up the bolts in turn, and use the breaker bar and 17mm socket to give them some grief.

This flat shaped socket worked even on my rounded one.

So save yourself time and hassle and buy these bits first!

CALIPER BOLTS!!!! I hate them I really do! They are so corroded in place! I just can't move them. Haven't rounded the bolts yet( ;) ) but I can't shift them! Gonna try heating them up and using a long piece of scaffold on my ratchet!

Anyway thats my rant over! I'm back to working on them now!

They really are stuck...put a spanner on them and started to give it some grief but I couldnt shift it...then put the jack under the spanner and started to jack away...no movement! It did however pick the car up and cause the chrome vandium spanner(a good set too) to start to bend! Went back to normal luckily otherwise I would of been in trouble! Gonna try this method with heat later!

I took a photo of the spanner on the caliper bolt holding the car off the axel stand! Not very clear but you get the idea...

wheres the axel stand? the bolt should break before taking 3-400kg in shear!
