I was using standard replacement discs/pads from GSF, cheap as they came for the turbo, did the job pretty well, but then it wasn't exactly flying as a car when they got changed
However, be prepared for this job - you may or may not need all or some of the following (in addition to a standard tool setup )
Penetrating easing oil (not wd40)
Long (at least 2m) sturdy pipe for leverage
Impact Driver
Good quality sockets
Caliper key (or suitable allen)
Copper Slip
New knuckles
Patience (lots of it, especially when trying to push back the rams in the calipers
Good luck

Prolly wont help for the disc retaining screw (which is the one thing that caused me to go buy an impact driver) - mine was mangled, but even if it wasn't, I don't think a regular driver would have done it!

Best way to get the disk retaining screw out is with a small metal chisel. Gets them turning pretty fast, the hub/shocker bolts are evil MO-FOs. if you can get them off, sure as hell replace them with new ones!!

Had to heat up alot of the bolts to get them to move and tap set to remove sheared bolts.

It was the memory of the front discs that triggered me to buy a £150 teng hex (not shitty bi-hex) socket set.
A set of imperial bihex and a lump hammer have got me out of some tight nut situations in the past though.

Oh, i love changing 480 front discs. No actually, i don't do I?
Martin, make sure you use decent tools, its the caliper bracket bolts (chamfered ) that will cause you grief!
I'm using the Red dot grooved discs (£105 (solid)) with the proper volvo pads (£30ish)

Before your start on each wheel have some fun with the brakes, their comming off anyway, everything comes out a hell of a lot easier when its hot! Have to work fast though or it cools down again.

no, I will see if my dad will give me a hand, He is changing the astra brake tomorrow and he knows how to do all this stuff.MatBat wrote:martinholmesuk wrote:Another easy 480 job. I might have access to some air tools.
I hope this doesn't mean, I am doing it!
BTw it's a piss easy job, (with air tools) 3 mins each side for front pads and discs. I got mine for £30 for both discs and all pads.

Yeh only if the bolts aren't rusted or stuck in, every caliper bolt on mine required a blow torch heat up and breaker bar to get them to move.MatBat wrote:martinholmesuk wrote:Another easy 480 job. I might have access to some air tools.

I didn't have a torch available so I ended up cutting the heads of mine off by drilling into the center of them until the heads broke off. Then when I got the caliper loose I put a nut on the protruding end of the bolt and MIG-welded that in place. After that heating it didn't take too much force to back out the remains of the old bolts.chris1roll wrote:.. make sure you use decent tools, its the caliper bracket bolts (chamfered ) that will cause you grief!
