Front discs/pads

Post by martinholmesuk » Mon Dec 06, 2004 8:48 am

Hi there,

Time to change the front pad/discs.

How about

V64147 BRAKE PAD SET-RE TEX O.E 480 Turbo 86>93 TEXTAR 18.50

Or

V64149 BRAKE PAD SET-RE PAGID 480 Turbo 86>93 PAGID 15.25

Or

we can supply a set of EBC kevlar pads @ #27.50 + carriage at #8.50. Regards

With

(front discs) Mine is a turbo 93 with ABS. Are the below correct?

V62219 BRAKE DISC-FR 256mm 480 Turbo 86>93 Vented Discs 16.00

Or

V60119 BRAKE DISC-FRONT 256mm 480 86-95 Vented Discs 21.00 (don't say Turbo)

What discs and pads are you using?

Cheers! :)

I was using standard replacement discs/pads from GSF, cheap as they came for the turbo, did the job pretty well, but then it wasn't exactly flying as a car when they got changed ;)

However, be prepared for this job - you may or may not need all or some of the following (in addition to a standard tool setup :P )

Penetrating easing oil (not wd40)
Long (at least 2m) sturdy pipe for leverage
Impact Driver
Good quality sockets
Caliper key (or suitable allen)
Copper Slip
New knuckles
Patience (lots of it, especially when trying to push back the rams in the calipers ;-)

Good luck :)

Prolly wont help for the disc retaining screw (which is the one thing that caused me to go buy an impact driver) - mine was mangled, but even if it wasn't, I don't think a regular driver would have done it!

Best way to get the disk retaining screw out is with a small metal chisel. Gets them turning pretty fast, the hub/shocker bolts are evil MO-FOs. if you can get them off, sure as hell replace them with new ones!!

Ho ho ho, this not fun, remember myself, Lee an Tony up till 3 am doing mine. Dont forget blow torch and tapping tools.

Had to heat up alot of the bolts to get them to move and tap set to remove sheared bolts.

arent the two bolts that hold the caliper onto the suspension leg chamfered?
i found that they were round on mine, and had to cut them off, the redrill/tap new holes etc...fucker of a job
better now though

green stuff do nice discs and pads that fit, but a bit expensive...grooved and crossed drilled etc....mutts nuts

It was the memory of the front discs that triggered me to buy a £150 teng hex (not shitty bi-hex) socket set.

A set of imperial bihex and a lump hammer have got me out of some tight nut situations in the past though.

Oh, i love changing 480 front discs. No actually, i don't do I?

Martin, make sure you use decent tools, its the caliper bracket bolts (chamfered :wall: ) that will cause you grief!

I'm using the Red dot grooved discs (£105 (solid)) with the proper volvo pads (£30ish)

Before your start on each wheel have some fun with the brakes, their comming off anyway, everything comes out a hell of a lot easier when its hot! Have to work fast though or it cools down again.

Oh and be carefull not to burn your fingers :(

I hope this doesn't mean, I am doing it!

BTw it's a piss easy job, (with air tools) 3 mins each side for front pads and discs. I got mine for £30 for both discs and all pads.

Yeh only if the bolts aren't rusted or stuck in, every caliper bolt on mine required a blow torch heat up and breaker bar to get them to move.

I didn't have a torch available so I ended up cutting the heads of mine off by drilling into the center of them until the heads broke off. Then when I got the caliper loose I put a nut on the protruding end of the bolt and MIG-welded that in place. After that heating it didn't take too much force to back out the remains of the old bolts.

That is exactly what i did (welding) i just angle ground mine off though.

Make sure you replace with the right bolts, the have to be anti-shear!
