Also, I know for sure that Volvo offers a special upgrade set for 850s: a small bracket or what, (dunno the English name of it) which could be fitted in between the struts and the calipers, allowing installation of bigger discs instead of regular ones, retaining the old calibers. This means I could install 304 millimeter discs instead of 280 millimeter ones. This is not widely promoted, but a friendly mechanic at the Volvo garage shared this info.
There might be one set for 480s, who knows?
The Turbo up to 90-91 had solid front discs, only after 91-92 did the vents become standard.

Good point

My car has the vented disks, they are also larger in diameter, since the 14 inch wheels won't fit on my car.

So the late turbo disks would be an upgrade to any 480, but also requires the calipers to be changed, and that you have 15 inch wheels.

Hmmmm

Im just getting new front discs and pads as Richard previously recommended.Ive got a 94 (95 model) Turbo,so just new front discs and pads for me at under £60 from GSF!

as far as I see I have the vented disks but not with 15" wheels,

Hi there :)

so there are two different versions of the vented brake disks ?

there are also two versions of caliper bracket for the non vented ones, so the pads are different. Very few use the smaller type.
Also the two versions of the rear discs, hub and no-hub, very few use the with hub type.
Standardisation Volvo style!

Oh!!!!

Hi there,

Are those for the 1993 480 turbo with front vented discs?

Cheers

Martin

the fronts are only 265mm in diameter , the VW disc shares the same PCD and offset , so you can fit a 280mm disc in there , any bigger means different wheels .

To fit different calipers will need a custom bracket

Volvo 240 brakes would be a good choice , but you have to remember the calipers are mounted at the back , not the front of the wheel as per 480

oh , and i should mention the discs of an 850 s/70 will be difficult to engineer .

ask me how i know what you should have for a braking upgrade ;)

Please tell me what we should have for a braking upgrade, as this is an area i am soon to visit, does it retain the 15" wheels?

Are you pushing more then normal power? If you drive an ES hard (cooking discs) then it would be a good idea.

Turbo fronts are vented.

Standard power at the minute, but its soon to change. Pi springs and koni dampers, means its easier to carry more speed through corners, so now using the brakes harder than i was, they are just beginning to fade, but its not warm outside, and its destined to see some action on a few track days next year, which are usually harsh on brakes, so i am planning on an upgrade.
