Budget braking upgrade-Wots the possibilities?

Im more than aware that the 480 braking system is realy good.

I will shortly, however,be improving on mine nevertheless.

So-what could I do?Get some Red Dot this and EBC that, sure. What the problem is there though is the price.

I was wondering what the chance of Volvo 244 4-pot front calipers fitting somehow on to a modified hub in some way. Also, the rear discs I would also like larger perhaps, but vented with uprated pads.

I do a lot of straight line driving in my Turbo see, about 60 % of it actually. One occasionally,as we all know, gets the flashing hazard lights and brake lights on a motorway, ofen as the result of an RTC or the like.

In essence,Im looking to shorten my braking distances but not so it feels like im driving a 244!!!!!!!!!!Screeeeeeeeeeech!

Rear disks don't do much work. Front ones do.

or so i hear! I will also need better brakes after the mod

I find the standard brakes to be fine, even doing stops from stupid speeds. Having grippy tyres helps a lot since the braking system seems to be able to outdo the tyres anyway.

I have used volvo brake pads. The only problem is they squeel like a pig being butchered alive if you stomp on the pedal. They don't fade though.

If you disks are anywhere near worn, then replacing them will make a big diff. remember to do the pads at the same time.

Looked at the 244 4pot calipers the other day, you only gain 3mm in brake diameter, and 2mm in thickness, the discs they are running are also solid, plus a 240 runs 5 studs not 4. I think the costs in engineering this would cost more than decent pads and discs.

The ate powerdiscs look a bargain, priced at 20 squid a pair, looks too good to be right.

Nice 1 all!!!!

Thanks for the replies so far everyone, and Hi Benji! Not too far from me!Wot u driving 480 wise then mate?

Rich,I have the Textar Volvo ones in now,yep they are damned good and haven't changed 'em for a year,34000 miles!!!!!!!!!!!Maybe I should count my blessings eh?!!!

I think Im going for standard replacements then, courtesy of GSF!Will have a butchers at the ATE powerdiscs though first,be bad manners not to eh?!!!

By the way,my car failed MOT on handbrake last week.Call me a cunt, but I still dont understand why my brakes are now more even front and rear now theyve changed the HANDbrake cables.Pedal is like a new car and brakes are faaaar better. The handbrake was apparently sezied on one caliper,so isnt the footbrake seperate?I just cant get my head round it!!Thicky!

:hopping:

Hey Steve

Reason your brakes are better is that with a seized on handbrake cable the self adjuster wouldnt work correctly, now with new cables its working so hey better footbrake.

Just remem that adjusters may need tweeking as cables bed in ( stretch)

:D

Ahhhhhh,now I sort of see!

Thanks Wayne!!!!

Im getting the gist now!

Its just one of those things my brain never has grasped immediately.Im technically a semi-skilled car mechanic, but I never really understood how to time-up an engine.Ive also never fitted points to a car and its started up afterwards!I can, however and in my defence,do 480 suspension at 20 mins per corner! This does NOT however mean my n/s/f PI has stopped popping out of its ****ing mounting!!!!

Cheers mate!

2.0 litre ES, lowered 40mm and running on 195/50r15 , so it looks kind of low, and its red, shinier than when i bought her, thanks to tcut and polish.

Is that your white 480 in your piccy?

There is an big brake kit available for the 440 and i had considered when i owned a 480 to see if it was adaptable to 480.

I can't see why it wouldn't, you would need to speak to brake god Gerrsvolvo.

Shop was motorsport something or other, i may have it still on my old p.c.[/url]

I too, have had this problem on a couple of occasions with my PI springs.

Recently, when I moved my them from my 1.7ES to my 2.0ES (they'd already 'dropped', as they were on the 1.7ES for a year), I made some modifications to the top mount to try and keep them in place. Basically, I've drilled two holes in each top mount, through the rubber, and metalwork (of the mount - not the spring!), and used some large cable ties through the holes to hold the spring in place. It looked pretty solid before I fitted it back on the car.

It's still early days though - they've only been on the car for 3 weeks so far, but it's looking good - they haven't come off the mount yet!

I took some pictures of what I did on my phone, but since upgrading my PC to XP SP2, my bluetooth connection to my phone is knackered, so I can't get them onto the PC to show you!

Ben.

wiring the springs into the cups is an ancient trick, i did that with cable ties to my escort about 5 years ago and they are still solid and have never been an issue at mot time. the rusty sills were though!

Ahhhhh!

MatBat recommended that I do this and I wont tell you what I cable tied to what as its rather embarassing.Suffice it to say that I misunderstood what Mat was suggesting!!!!!!!!!!!!

As far as I know, 1.7 and 2 liter 480s have solid front discs while Turbos have ventillated ones. First step when improving brakes on 1.7/2.0 models could be fitting Turbo sets...

Also, I know for sure that Volvo offers a special upgrade set for 850s: a small bracket or what, (dunno the English name of it) which could be fitted in between the struts and the calipers, allowing installation of bigger discs instead of regular ones, retaining the old calibers. This means I could install 304 millimeter discs instead of 280 millimeter ones. This is not widely promoted, but a friendly mechanic at the Volvo garage shared this info.
There might be one set for 480s, who knows?

Also, there is a 320 mm set with 4 pot calipers for 850s, this is which was installed on R models.

I know that groved and perforated discs are available from a firm called tar•ox, but these are shitty ones, I threw them away rippled after less than 2000 kms.
