Brake disc backing plates

Post by suddy » Mon Sep 16, 2013 6:06 pm

Are these brake disc backing plates/splash guards required for the MOT?

Mine are starting to rust away, so how do they attach to the axle? Are they bolted on with the caliper carriers I wonder? I can't see how they are attached to the car...

Kind Regards

As far as I know, they aren't required. Plenty of cars don't have them at all.

Not too sure how they attach, I would have thought they bolt to the stub axle behind the disc.

Hammers can't fix a 480!!!

I think they are welded on! I cant see any bolts holding them on whatsoever. Going to take the disc off at the weekend and investigate.

Thanks

I made 'new' ones from a piece of galv iron and fixed them to the back plate with the clamps that came with mud-flaps!
I think they are fitted along with the bolts that bolt hub to 'axle'

still to do the front ones as they are almost gone too (well about a third are still there)

I plan to fix them on with the brake caliper bolts, as I have fitted hi tensile new ones as the originals had to be removed with a grinder  I sent SWAMBO to local bolt supplier but the ones that were 'in stock' on the PC had been removed  so had a second trip to rumage thro the store £12 for four :(
