Handbrake cable replacement - advice needed

Post by Cyclone_27 » Sat Sep 10, 2011 6:01 pm

Hi guys, i recently got a new OSR handbrake cable so i can get my car underway for mot. Anyways i've followed the Haynes as best i can but im having trouble removing the heat shield, the screws wont give. If i drill or pull them out what size screw would i need to get to replace them? I've been told i would need self tapping screws, is this right?
Also any advice you guys can give so i can finish this job would be great, im still learning to look after my 480 you see

Dead simple toss the HBOL in the bin . :kill: HBOL

thats a load of bull

have change umpteen handbrake cables and have never had to remove a heat shield yet

It is a simple job. Remove from the back and draw it through then shove new replacement in.

Hi

When I changed the handbrake cables, i had the same problem. I hat to drill one bolt out, and i use normal "body screws" (I don't know the correct name) but you can easily use self tabbing screws. I am not familiar with Jim's trick. worth a try.

ok lets get this sorted now !

looking at HBOL 87-97 manual section 9.13 picture 20.3 thats what every 480 I have ever owned looks like at the hand brake lever end so I dont understand what heat shields the manual refers to !!!!

If it is the heat shield further back then you dont need to remove them . If you are worried above getting the new cable back in use the old electricians trick of attaching some wire to the end of the old one and then use that to help draw through the new cable.

oh very very important dont lose the little clips !!!!!

the next time I am changing a handbrake cable I will do a how to

Well

the two cars I have bin working on had a heat shield between the exhaust pipe and the handbrake adjuster.
It looks like this (no1)

I cant get to the lever without loosen the shield and move it out of the way.

The two cars was from 1987 and 1988

Weather permitting tomorrow im gonna hopefully finish the job off. I'll try and remove it without messing round with the heat shield but we'll see what happens. If i get stuck then you'l probably see another post from me

This is strange, just replaced one hand brake cable yesterday on a 90 Turbo, and I didn't have to move any heatshield.
Also, the nut mentioned in the picture is fixed to the cable and will not move, the other nut behind the balancer is the one I tightened to adjust the handbrake setting. You have to hold the cable utilizing the #2 nut though.

I also cannot remember the Haynes saying anything about moving the heatshield, iirc there are 2 revisions of the Haynes Manual out there.
