hi all,

am trying to swap the front discs and brakes....
have done the drivers side, but can im damned if i can get the passenger side calpier off to swap the disc!
the 17mm studs are now round, they were knackered before i started, now there worse!
gonna have to bite the bullet and goto a garage, to see if they can do anything, but before i do, just wondered if anyone had had this problem (im sure im not the only one), and how they resolved it?

any advice appreciated!
ps...if any one has got a passenger side calpier mount (the bit of the caliper that bolts to the hub), going cheap, let meknow, then i will cut off the stuck one on mi car!

ta much in advance

use torch to heat them up, or weld some "power tool" to the bolt's head..

Or do what I used to have to do to repair that rounded break-drum adjuster on my mini (a standard fix for all mini's, I believe). Just weld (or get someone else to weld) a bigger nut on (without rounded edges)!

Those bolts (front and rear) are the bane of my life. I ended up cutting them off with an angle grinder, clamping the caliper bracket in a vice and welding a decent head on to what was left of them to get them out. They are teh most stupid design ever, as they taper off, so if you put any force on them the socket cams off.

If you haven't touched them, get two people.get your assistant to hold a crowbar or similar behind the socket to prevent any lateral movement and use a breaker bar on the ratchet handle. If your lucky it will come off. Replace with new ones. I don't think i've done a 480 yet that i haven't had to cut at least one off!

thanks

Hi all,

thanks for the advice....
the studs are apretty round shape now!
just been to a garage, they applied heat etc then hammered on what they called 'turbo' sockets
they looked like a multipoint socket inside, but they were full of teeth...the mechanic broke three before giving up (snapon, so he can replace them for nowt!)
going to have to buy an old hub,and swap the lot i think.....
do any of the 400 series hubs fit, or will it have to be a 480?
ta much

Think so, just make sure you get the right one for your breaking system eg. abs or not..

Much cheaper to grind them out and buy new bolts. once you've ground the head off the bracket will slide off with the disc. i.e. the bolts are only threaded into the bracket, not the hub as well, then get a friendly garage to weld for about 10 seconds. once you get a decent head on them they aren't even that tight!!Make sure you get the right bolts, they are high tensile steel, other ones could snap!!

I had a go at this today.... those 17mm head bolts are a pain. i ended up hamering on a smaller imperial socket, which shifted them. Off to volvo tomorrow to get nw bolts!

By the way, to introduce myself i'm john, former fiat panda-god, owner of "the" panda, and new owner of a mint 94' turbo in red.

I just hate them !!!

Also the little bolt that holds the disks in place, but I got them off.

After not coming off, I looked for advice ;
1)heat them up
2) use oil and let it work for some time
3) 'scare' the bolts (exact translation from dutch), use a spanner, put it firmly on and use a little hammer to strike the spanner.

After a combination of all three I won.
Took me a weekend, but now got 2 new discs and four new brake pads on.

Have to say that the third option worked the best.
