Traction Control

Post by VOLVO480S » Wed Feb 25, 2004 9:10 am

In Reply to message posted by the webmaster concerning TRACS. My 480 is a modelyear '93 registered in '92 and has ABS and TRACS.

I recommend you change the post about determining whether you have TRACS or not.

Greetings

F.A.Q. Article on website wrote:To see if you have TRACS you must check the ABS computer in your car. If it is a Mark IV ABS Computer and it has a blue sticker where the number ends with 72 you have TRACS.
@VOLVO480S: does this still apply to you? If so all I need to do is change "only 1994 and 1995" to only "only 1993 to 1995"...

The german 1993 brochure doesn't mention TRACS.
Remember, that TRACS can be easily mounted to a non-TRACS car: You only have to change the ABS / brake module in the engine bay - won't take you more than 2 hours. No additional work at the wheels, the brake-pipes or whereever required! Only thing is to find a 480 from which you can take the TRACS-module...
(My 1995 GT which should have had TRACS hadn't - as many other GTs. But I "upgraded" my car with TRACS using the module from a 1995 Collection (yes!) from a scrapyard...

right now i am really confused!!! sometimes when accelerating hard my wheels spin and would do for as long as i keep my foot on the accelarator. other times theres this weird sort of "burrrr" sound and no spin. so does this mean that i have tracs and its not working proplerly???

i tried to look for that sticker thingy that ends in 72 but as i dont really have a clue as to what or where i am supposed to be looking for/at so i am a bit stuck. any pics or clues to where i should be looking would be of great help. also what does a mark IV ABS / brake module look like and how can i tell if it is a mark IV or not??

HELP!!!!

Also am i right in thinking that there should be some sort of warning light on the dash for tracs?? and also a switch to turn it on or off? i am sure that i saw something like that in the 480 handbook that came with the car. (will check on this as soon as i hunt the thing out again!)

TRACS - Determination

Post by VOLVO480S » Wed Feb 25, 2004 11:39 pm

Concerning the TRACS-story: I have here in front of me a Dutch '93 brochure saying that ABS combinated with TRACS are optionally available to all models. My '92 brochure doesn't mention this so now I draw the conclusion that TRACS was available from modelyear '93 and so on.

TRACS cannot be turned off and functions contiuously by reversing the ABS-system on the front wheels.

Determining whether you have this system can be done by looking at the numbers given by this Club but also by counting the outputs of the ABS-system near the Breakfluidreservoir. When this has 6 outputs with two of them in the middle extended towards the engine you can be sure to have TRACS mounted on your 480.

The "BRRR" as someone described with spinning wheels is the reversed function of the ABS as called: TRACS.

Goodluck to you all and drive safely.

Robert

Not true, as a search for my previous post will enlighten, i tried to put a blue72 ECU in my 94 2.0Li which has 6 ports on a MKIV modulator,

my abs modulator has 4 ports on the side (2 longer ones in the middle)& 2 at the back & DOES NOT WORK with the blue72 ECU.

There appear to be 2 varients of the MKIV ABS Modulator kicking around.
The turbo donar the ECU came from has 6 ports all on the side (2 longer ones in the middle)

I discovered from richard that TRACS is turned on and off by earthing the spare wire which is next to the diag. box. I did this through my diag box (and blew it) so don't do that! Mine never worked until that point.
