rear hubs stripped threads....re-threading possible?

Post by LIP » Sun Oct 04, 2009 11:40 am

Hi All
After the garage used an air gun to fit my rear wheels I've got some stripped thread issues on both rear hubs.
Rather than replace both hubs would it be possible to re-thread the wheel bolt holes & fit over sized new wheel bolts?
Any ideas anyone please my wallets a bit light at the moment.
thanks
Lip

Hey Lip,

Well what i've done once, is re-thread bolt holes on my old alfa and used the same bolts. It did work once... second time it didnt of course. But: You can use a so called "helicoil": You (or more likely a mechanic) widen the bolt holes and then screw a helicoil in it and use over sized new wheel bolts. From what i've heard, that would be a quite cheap thing to have done.

Oh, just had a deeper look into it, seems you could even use the old bolts with the heli-coil inserted.

you could have a look at this how-to-video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RFYa6sjhh_E

Or this basically commercial video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gxnm8J9WXz8

persnally i would not use helicoil kits on wheel bolts i would tap the holes out to big threed size heli coils are good but do fail sometimes and u dont want that to happen with wheels
