Front Caliper Problem

Post by SteveR » Sat Jun 20, 2009 1:16 pm

Just trying to remove the calipers to change front discs on teh TT and found the sliding pins had seized. In trying to loosen one of them it sheared off so now I need a new caliper for front LH. The caliper shows as Girling but on ebay calipers are advertised for the 480 as ATE and one place asked me if they were Lucas. Does anyone know what the differences are and if they are interchangable?

i think the difference is vented or not.on the solid disc the pins are seperate.you wouldnt need new caliper .they are just a slide fit.

I suspect that ABS is ATE and Non ABS is Girling as the caliper says Volvo Girling on it.
I agree I do not need a complete assembly including piston and all but it seems that is teh only way to buy - all I really need is the solid frame bit with the sliding pin assembly.

its called the carrier.some places will carry that separately.maybe the stealer.may be worth a try. colud try breakers. if you drill down the bolt where the head was with a bit slightly smaller than the bolt it will come off.mine is girling solid no abs. some 440 are the same.i see if i find one.

Thank you for the thoughts ted clutch. I considered drilling down but would rather get a new/used carrier as I suspect the whole inside of the slider housing is rusted beyond reuse. At least I can use the GT for some contract work I have this week. If you have a carrier lying around with good sliders I would be pleased to buy. gingerheed is also checking a subframe he has.

As someone is going to buy the GT (saving it from the scrappage scheme) I need to get the TT on the road and phoned Volvo. Apparently there is a repair kit for teh rusted pin for just over £20 so as Ted says I will drill down teh carrier and fit the pin - news when it's done - before we move house in 28 days ish from far SW Hampshire to far SE Dorset where they are building a reef to improve the surfing.

Had a look at the website but it does not look like they have the bits I need which are often the car manufacturer's items but I will give them a call if the Volvo bits are not ok. Many thanks.

SteveR the sliding pins you are looking for are they steel/silver coloured about 5/6cm long round and smooth with a narrower thread about 8mm at one end. if so I am certain to have spares of these.

Just checked if it it these you need then look no further as I have abouty 8 spare of these

Work in progress to remove the sheared off pin. It must be well rust welded in because I have tried copious amounts of release agent along with gentle heat (ie my faithful ronson gas flame) so I hope another day of persuading will work. Next stage is to remove the carrier - grip the pin in the vice and turn the carrier - appliance of science.
