Rear Piston won't go back in.

Post by rgreenhalf » Mon Apr 07, 2008 4:16 pm

Trying to change pads, have backed off the adjuster (although it was stiff as missing its dust cap) so that's got no resistance, got the caliper off, old pads out, but can't seem to force the piston back in to make room for some new pads! I'm gonna have to put the old pads in short term, as I'm needing the car :(

Any ideas / inspiration?

Cheers

Ross

Ok well if the adjuster isn't working(isn't retrieving the piston) then it sounds like it is stuffed and would therefore require a new caliper. In a simialr situation on one of my ES's I just forced the piston back in with a g-clamp and then fitted the pads and then would the caliper adjuster lots and luckily it started working again so I wound it until it started moving the piston out.

Worth a try. It probably means a garage in the past have monkeyed the caliper though by not winding it off.

rgreenhalf. Just how are you trying to do this?

When I did it I just wound it back using the allen key. I replaced the sills so the whole piston came out but putting it back was hard work as the screw needed pushing into piston then had to catch the thread.

Sounds like its knackered, fairly common actually. Just had to replace one, two of the three spares we had were the same!

Well I followed the advice on here / Haynes. I unwound the adjuster bolt using a 5mm Allen key, I wound this to the point of no resistance, i.e a little bit anti clockwise not much. I've had the old pads out, and tried winding the piston back in using a g clamp, but it just won't move.

On second opinion I just think its knackered. Im going to try refurbing the whole thing using a seal kit from brake parts for £9. Its just a bit s**t at the moment because the car is now not usable! My handbrake cable is well stuck on my caliper as well, so thats going to need something serious (heat) to get it unstuck.

I know GSF do calipers for £59+vat which might just be the simpler option, But I like the idea of refurbing them, Im going to assume the other caliper is in a simliar state, so its 2 sets of seals, 2 handbrake cables, and lots of effort that I could do without

Not a great day really!

Currently have the caliper off, trying to soak the seals overnight with penetrating fluid to get the piston out to replace the seals.

Hang on mate. I think the thread is reverse! Try winding it the other way or using the clamp then winding it back in reverse.

I know I had big problems getting this sorted.

So the piston 'Winds' back in? Im well confused all I know now is that I need a new seal kit though, as I've destroyed the dust seal trying to sort this

It's ok I've confirmed my suspicions this morning, by doing the other side fine. i.e Im not a complete muppet!

I've orded a new caliper service kit from brake parts.co.uk (£13 + rip off postage) and i'll try photo some of the rebuild for a how to guide. Piston is slowly working its way out, with the help of my hammer and plenty of lube.
