Front Caliper rebuild.

Post by martinholmesuk » Sun Feb 24, 2008 6:18 pm

Anyone rebuilt one?

Trying to replace front pads. The piston will not go back into the caliper body and rubber seal is split. I can see what looks like surface rust on the piston.

I'm sure I can clean the piston up and rebuild the caliper like I did on the rears.

How easy should it be to push the piston back into the caliper body? I could not budge it at all using a massive pair of grips. The old pads are installed again and braking seems fine.

I expect I can force the piston out using my air compressor and rebuld it.

thoughts please

I've rebuilt calipers....not 480 ones but they're all much the same.

A really silky caliper should shove in with thumbs if the reservoir lid is undone. I usually use a g clamp!

Sounds like boot going has allowed water to rust the piston. Fathers nissan rear was the same last week.

Took piston out, cleaned up with wet and dry, new boot and lots of rubber grease (if you can get it!)

Fine now. Used to do my panda ones about once a year...they were awful for it.

Thanks John, I rebuilt the calipers on the spitfire and it went well. I think the best course is to rebuild the calipers then.

If vented type calipers were easy to get hold of...i'd just say change it, but in this case i'd definately try a rebuild.
