Discs and pads recomentations? (GT)

Post by Drazyl » Thu Apr 05, 2007 12:48 pm

Took the car in for new front tyres and brake pads today. Seems whatever system they use doesn't know what a 480 is and they couldn't find any pads to fit, advising I supply some pads for them to fit. If I'm going to do that, may as well replace the discs as well, so my question is can anyone recommend a decent set of pads and discs for my GT, preferably not too expensive but something that will improve the standard braking.

Hello mate!

I swear by the EBC Black Stuff pads which are Kevlar. They make a hooj difference to mine,Im on my 2nd set.

http://www.brakes4u.co.uk/products.asp?id=12192

Discs, are they actually badly worn?Is there a lip you can feel around the edge of the disc???

Standard vented ones are brill with EBC pads.

There is also Black Diamond,Red Dot etc but these do cost!

Yup, discs have a lip - not sure when they were last replaced. My reasoning is I would rather spend a bit of money now and know that everything is hunky-dory.

Speaking to the guy at the garage today (wifes car was getting new front tyres), he said something about the brake pads in the GT being square and not the normal shape - before I go out and buy EBC's, does anyone have any idea what he is talking about? Slightly worried I might have some sort of non-standard caliper/pads fitted...

Hi again!

Square pads cold mean you have Girling brake system. Those pads were square.

BUT,fear not.If you use the link I already posted you, look for the other types listed as it does also list Girling shape.

How these ended up on a GT can only be by someone swapping in the past I assume.

Id fit standard discs though mate, with the EBC pads. They do the job really well.

Looks like it's a Girling system (one side says Girling, the other says Lucas) - strange. Any idea if this would affect anything else (ABS, TRACS etc)?

Hi mate

Shows how much I know about 2.0s then !!!

You obviously have Lucas/Girling braking system..

And no it wont affect your TRACS as it is designed to run using either the ATE/Teves or Lucas/Girling systems.

You can use EBC pads though man...these are great. You have reason to be pleased so be pleased!!!

Go on say summit!! :D :hopping:

Pads are on order, plus discs as well. Should turn up this week hopefully. Cheers for the help.

Thats a pleasure mate!

Be good to see if you like them too!

They do leave residue on your alloys for the first little while until they bed in properly but nothing to cause alarm!

You may have to bleed your system as youll need to force your calipers back fully to get new pads in.This involves taking cap off master cylinder.

You can use DOT 5.1 or DOT 4 by the way for this.Haynes tells you how to bleed them properly.

Any help needed,gimme a shout.

Steve

why? as the lines havent been loose there is no air in the system.
the onlything that can happen is that the tank can overflow by the amount of oil that comes back by pushing the cilinders
