Stuck rear brake

Post by pol » Wed Feb 07, 2007 3:30 pm

Hola,

This morning it was pretty funking freezing (info centre read -5). It took me a while to defrort windscreen, had to pull over when it froze up again etc... Anyway, I noticed my handbrake felt a bit slack and the car wasnt rolling so well. After the short drive to the station, I could smell cooking brake linings... One real wheel seemed to have been part seized on the short trip.

Do handbrake cables freeze? Can cold weather mess with my calipers?

Thanks,

pol

Handbrake cable

Post by Richmann1 » Wed Feb 07, 2007 3:40 pm

Hi Pol

Yeah its generally the handbrake cable that seizes, when i lived in Aberdeen i used to keep a flat blade screwdriver in the boot and just levered it gently when it had frozen at the pivot point.

Cheers

Rich :D

same thing happened to me, passenger side slackened off after leaving it to warm up, being close to the exhaust helped this is i believe, the drivers side was the one that stuck on mine. as mentioned if the handbrake sticks on, get under with a lever or (i used mole grips) to grip the small lever with the cable attached and release the stuck-ness. ive started just leaving it in gear when on the flat anyway especially when its so frosty!

I also found that if its not totally glued in place then pressing the footbrake really hard seems to cause the whole assembly to visibly flex, an audible click can be heard as it releases (turn the engine off and recruit an assistant!)

gotta love these cars they should have sold them under a slogan...

"Volvo 480: Predictably unreliable"

when its cold the brakes stick on, when it rains it leaks, whenever it feels like it your electrics will go haywire...

but this has to be part of why we love them right?

I just left mine to warm up and after a while it was ok.

I thought the handbrake cable was at fault so I put a new one on this weekend. Caliper still binds though. It's taken about two weeks to completely wear down a new set of pads. Unfortunately, it's not really terribly practical to get out of the car and lever the mechanism back at every junction on the way to work and back so I'm looking for a replacement caliper (already have a wanted ad in the parts section).

Does anyone know if the calipers on 440/460 models are the same? Will probably make getting hold of one easier if they are.
