Brakes upgrade

Post by Milosz_480 » Mon Nov 13, 2006 10:14 pm

Brakes in my ES are too weak. I'm currently running on standard discs and Textar's pads. I'd like to put bigger and vented discs and callipers from turbo but I'm not so sure if it works as I have not got ABS. Is it possible to do without ABS?

just out of interest... i'm currently running the 2 litre abs system (its on a 440 but i presume its the same setup as on the 480) - is the turbo brakes a lot better than the 2 litre ones?

The bigger brakes on the 440/460/480 are a bit more lineair in brakingpower than the smaller types. This is probably done so that the abs system works slightly better.
If you brake a lot, than using vented discs would be preferred, because it's better for your wear on brakepads..
If you suddenly need to brake it would even be possible that the solid brake types would perform better.
It depends on what you want on your car. The difference between the two is notable, but only on what they are designed for.

i almost wonder (not really done much research) if a renault 19 16v braking setup would fit the volvo - drive shafts etc.. I believe are the same or very similar. If this is the case, you can get big brake kits for the renaults.

I have a 480 GT and find the brakes a little bit on the useless side especially when you are driving hard, or in wet conditions just want to know the best option to upgrade them with. For example what size dics fit comfortably on it and wht do others recomend for hard driving style. Please reply asap as mine need to be chnaged.

 Thanks alot. :kill:

Hi Jimmy!

Try a set of EBC Black Stuff pads for you GT mate.

Theyre £35 for the fronts and are the bollocks!

I got mine from EBC brakes direct on the net.

Aren't black stuff stock quality? Thought green stuff were the uprated ones.

In any case, vented disks from turbo are definately up to the job. My cars stop on a dime.

Yes I think green stuff are the ones!
I have found some vented drilled grooved discs and pads for front and rear but £500 for the lot!! :cryhard:
Apparently the best brakes money can buy without going into the carbin fibre stuff!!

Guys I don't think you can get Greenstuff pads for the 480. :(
Mind you if you are on the ATE system there are some Saab 9000 ones that look almost identical and are a couple of mm different dimension-wise. They might fit and are available as Greenstuff, Redstuff and so on.

@ John- Yeah the EBC Blackstuff are standard but Groomus said he thought they were quite an improvement on the Volvo ones (which Chris1Roll rated pretty good).
Gonna find out as I got a set of fronts from Ebay last week....for £6 :hopping:
