Volvo 480 ES Hand brake

Post by danc1978 » Wed Sep 13, 2006 10:33 pm

hi all,

i have a volvo 480 and have a slight problem that materialised last week in that the hand brake does not work at all, it dont seem to be broken still feels like it bites but does not stop the wheels from moving at all, basically what i am asking is, is there a way i can just tighten the hand brake if its just come loose and if not how easy is it to replace and any thoughts basically.

many thanks

Dan

Sounds like the cables, they probably need replacing. They can go a bit saggy and the ends get weathered. Check the pads and discs incase, but it's probably the cables. It's an easy job, but they charge a fair amount of labour on this. I got quoted £170 p&l. I ended up doing it myself... I got some second hand cables for £14. It passed it's MOT, and the handbrake worked and 2 years on my second handers still work fine :) (god I love the cheap parts you can pick up second hand from this club ;) ). The only problem was all the shit off the bottom of my car falling into my eyes when I was taking the old cables out  .

My handbrake is the same, my garage has been saying I need new cables for a couple o years now, when it comes to MOT time, he adjusts it so that the handbrakes work and then they gradually fade over the year. Only a bodge really but saves buying and fitting new cables...
