Both manual and automatic transmission are discussed here, including the clutch!

"new" gearbox

Post by alfonzobonzo » Wed Mar 15, 2006 1:23 pm

seems that the gearbox i bought was potentially , a bit of a lemon.

there is a gental whine in first & perhaps second, like a milk float

I refilled with some transmission fluid from halfrauds (cant remember what) but it was the correct grade castrol? maybe

might drain it and put some other stuff in to see if that makes any diff

also i didnt alter the connecting rod any, but that shouldnt make any difference, right?

whats the best course of action do you think?

what gearbox oil do you reccomend

I'm not down, at least it go's

cheers :D

Was that the one I pointed out for sale in kings lynn many moons ago? I thought that car had low mileage! I think it needs volvo fluid though.... :scared:

I swear I read somewhere the volvo stuff is the best and it specially designed to work with the gearbox! Maybe give Pol a PM as he changed his gearbox a while back.

nope, pol recommended volvo own brand, will change it this weekend & report back

i doubt itle fix it tho, sounds like something rubbing on teeth very gently

a real high pitch whirring noise, not evident in any other gear other than 1 & 2

may be better when hot, dunno yet

gonna start using it in anger when RT runs out on T4 end of this month

then it'll be my daily ride.

nope, didnt make any difference

if i try to engage first from second, i hear it then, iit seems to be related to the speed of the engine rather than the speed of the box, hence it dissapears when in 3rd.

i guess its a worn baring on the input shaft?
