Lucy's gearbox is strange!

Both manual and automatic transmission are discussed here, including the clutch!

Lucy's gearbox is strange!

Post by Rachel » Tue Mar 07, 2006 7:14 pm

Hello, my 480 (1990 turbo auto) has afew problems. Going from third to fourth the revs spike, and also sometimes she changes to soon. I checked the ATF and is slightly low but not below the min. I guess the first thing to do is to change the ATF, but which one? There seems to be confusion which the people I have asked so far. She has done 106.000 miles, any help would be great! ;)

Hello,

Auto turbo driver here, Does it rev spike between gears if your driving it hard or if just build up the speed. It' prob not a good thing so you might need a rebuild!

What colour is the ATF? Red or dark red / black? Anothing that's not bringht red then it's been burning the atf / slipping which is bad.

Hey Rach, welcome to club.
Re ATF, I just got the Volvo main dealer stuff, it's literally a couple of pounds more than 'other brand' atf fluid. Changed mine last year as the stuff in there looked very dark compared to the light red stuff she has now, and is quieter and smother for it.

Unlike Groomiester not to have mentioned a certian ATF additive by now...... :?

Hi Rachael!

If the colour as Mart (aka Milf Hunter ;-) ) says is any colour but pink or red, change it immediately.Mines on 110k and since 34k Ive always put in Lubegard off ebay with each ATF change.

This guy username oregonperformancetransmissions sells it dead cheap.

Yey,another Auto Turbo owner!

and yey another lady onwer on here! :hopping:

Hello! Thank you all very much for your replies. You have made me feel very welcome :D As for my motor, the revs spike doesn't happen if driving hard. Would this be signifcant? Gear change is smooth when I do it manually, but rev spike is still there  The ATF seems to be a good colour. As advised I have contacted the dude on Ebay to get the right Lubegard. Thanks again guys, from us both! ;)

sounds exactly like my auto 1.7!

Ive added some things in a psot called "ZF model" or something close to that

thinking bout it, it would seem either the pressure control valve for 4th isnt responding - getting old or the bands are worn....

Seems to describe the same problem my sister has with her 480, not much you can do about it but she has been driving it for about 40.000km's since it started doing it. The reason it doesn't do it when you drive it hard is becouse of the kickdown that you only use with max throttle.

I thought I would put in the result of this old...possibly the first post I wrote,( I don't even have the car anymore!) as it might be useful to someone. After some advice it turned out to be the kickdown cable, which was much too loose. Tightened it up and the rev spikes dissappeared. Was very pleased. The only problem left was that it didn't change down sometimes from 3rd to 2nd (i think) when cold, but was near perfect after warming up. I did put in the Lubegard too, which seemed to help....so I would recommend it to other auto drivers. Then again, I would also recommend that they get a manual ;)
