Clutches again!!
Sorry about the masses of techy questions by me but needs must.
Any way need a new clutch (small clutch early engine) needs to be able to handle around 200bhp.
Heard good things about sachs and velao, nay one know any thing.

Would an uprated clutch off a R5 GT Turbo or other renault be any good, seeing as the engine is renault anyway?

The standard volvo clutch is stronger than any of the R5 ones, however, the EARLY type volvo clutch will not handle 200 bhp, or if it does, not for very long, why do you think they uprated it for the later models running the same power?
You will need to get a late type flywheel and the ECU to go with it, if you want to run that power without slippage.

All depends on year of engine. Early clutches were 200mm, later 215mm.
If 200 mm type, then GSF part number R18914 is the only one worth anything. It is the valeo one. Make sure you specify this make at GSF. If you are looking for big power figures then the cover from this kit can be matched with a 4 puck paddle plate.
DO NOT BUY GSF PART NUMBER R18914A. It is a sachs clutch and will slip at 14psi, infact even less sometimes.
If u are on 215mm type then both myself and Haz have had good results from them. Haz's didn't slip at 25psi with the 215 sachs clutch

The general consensus does seem to be Volvo (Sachs/ Valeo) cover plate with uprated friction disc.
I just got a new old stock 215mm Volvo Turbo clutch kit, will now be searching out an uprated friction disc.
@ Haz i'm surprised you were running the standard 215mm Turbo clutch at 250bhp with no slip. Was it a new clutch or something?

The sachs clutch in 200mm is pathetic. The cover force is about the same as a non turbo one, and it's the cover's clamping force that makes all the difference to maximum torque capacity. not the plates material.VanDerGraaf wrote:The general consensus does seem to be Volvo (Sachs/ Valeo) cover plate with uprated friction disc.

Different materials are to withstand the heat better with sustained clutch use.. i.e. towing and standing starts.
I don't know of an organic plate available for our engines, but a 4 puck ceramettalic paddle is available from a few different companies. Because the clamping force is localised in the 4 points rather than the full diameter, higher torque capacity results.
I have run 250 lbft through a 200mm valeo cover and 'techno 2' paddle plate
Just about to order one cheersoverboost wrote:Thats the onedave wrote:Just checked on that clutch on the Gsf site. Heres the results,

Its not so much that as the paddles twist slightly and dig in. Lots of torque capacity as you say...but chews up the stator pretty fast.Because the clamping force is localised in the 4 points rather than the full diameter, higher torque capacity results.
