I don´t think it will hold long with more than 160 HP.
After 10 years the ZF boxes even get killed with the standard 120 HP. More boxes fail with the 2 liters engines !
I think you can have fun with them when you change every year the gearboxoil and give the box a flush! But even than i´m not optimistic !
I allready killed a gearbox, so i know what i´m talking about

wonder if renault made the gearbox as well ?
cause the ones they used on most cars of that period is a piece of piss
JB3 gearbox seems to pop the diff circlip when its on its way hence you loose drive , than you put the bloody circlip back on and it pops out again after god knows how many miles
anyway ,anyone know if the gearboxes on these cars renault/volvo would be interchangeable ??

It will take a rich mod without a problem. I will also take a super mod but after a month it will die. (standard crappy cooler)
I might add that's using a super mod and T2 which spools up to fast and rips the autobox up. It's not the same using my T25 as I get more spool and the gears are ready for it.
I'm now back on standard rich mod without any problems but i'll be fitting a cooler.
The main problem is heat! The atf goes black like oil and it's just shit, I would fit a better cooler if you wanna more then standard power.

hmm
Well if it dies after a month with the super mod the box can't handle it.
Atleast, that is how I think about it.
Bigger cooler might be an idea.
But 2 cars I have been after are already sold.
One very nice black auto from 1993
One turbo flame red metallic from 1994.
For both I was just too late.
damn
Have to wait for the next opportunity.

Mine has been running a Pruen upgrade for 50000 miles.I change the Trans Fluid every 10000 and use a bottle of Lubegard Transmission Protectant to reduce its friction and heat.Amsoil additive is even better.
No slipping,no odd noises,smooth changes.Car on 108000 miles,original gearbox.

if the oil's going black then its going out of its heat range, a bigger cooler would be required and a higher rating fluid would be helpful.
the boxes do interchange but to be fair the volvo ones feel stronger/nicer. there are variations of volvo box too, m50, m54? etc

i believe any gearbox would be better than renault one (jb3),it just cant cope with the power on the r19 16v (137bhp)haz@nocturnal_development wrote:

i know its an auto thread but just offering other optons. auto and performance dont belong together. why bother spending time n money if you know its not goin to work?
cheers steve, i'm sure there's a couple?
shakal, you also need the 19's drivers shaft cup too. a jb3 should be able to cope with more power than that tho. theres also a quick mod to make the 16v feel alot more responsive

it seems he's ruined alot of stuff thru testing, and when he does he does it properlymartinholmesuk wrote:Haz, I only do auto but your right if you want big power go manual but even those standard M59 (turbo box) die, ask Rich his killed a few.
i know he's done alot for the club but you forget that rich isn't the only person who tries and tests stuff, but sometimes experience can prevent some mishaps, hence me gettin help along the way. we use technology thats accurate rather than LED's etc and i still have my std pistons, at least 12mth old clutch, my old turbo came off in 1 peice etc etc.

i have a worskshop with a few of my mates, as a place where we could work on our cars, and then our mates cars, which has kinda grew into a part time business. we do what we can, like servicing, accident damage, engine conversions, bespoke conversions, supply of parts and advice and whatever else we get asked.
we are enthusiasts and try to make some cash from doing something we enjoy and are interested in.
i'm very keen to get as much power from the b18ft, ideally i'd have a group B rally car as my runabout, but they're a bit outta my price range, so i'm tryin to learn as much as poss from other like minded nutters, and build something of similar spec.
anyhow, back on topic
i've not really done much with auto-boxes, and cant see any pro's to using one in a powerful car, so haven't done alot of research, but i'm sure something could be done. sorry i cant help
