After reading throught the other threads in this section I'm thinking gear linkage??

could be the linkage bushes that are so often touted as the cause to this kind of thing?

480's are a little more tricky to maintain than men......with men all you do is press a button and hey presto off they go!!
enough of the smut......linkage bushes.....sounds like a good place to start, how difficult/expensive.....will it get worse if I dont address it soon?

Ring Volvo Joolz as theyre only available through them.
They arent that expensive from memory, about 30 quid-ish.
Theyre eay to fit too,but if yer paying someone (in kind, drugs whatever) you should be looking at no more than an hour to 2 hours labour absolute maximum.....

ok had my sloppy gear change checked out today by the guy that did my cambelt.....
according to him it's not the linkage bushes its errm something else......he didnt make himself very clear as to what it actually was (warning signs) something to do with the gears but in the shaft that runs underneath and we're going to have to take the casing off (more warning signs)......he will try and locate a part for me!!!!! what part exactly he didnt say (bullshit signs) oh and he did say I had a leak of gear box oil but i wouldnt see it because it had all dripped into a tray....... couldn't say how much it was going to cost me......
so
bullshit or not??
I've looked very closely at the power transmission threads on here and can't fiind anything that he describes
should I get a second oppinion?
cheers

Well I am thinking correct me if i am wrong.
You are cruising along at what ever speed (140mph) in what ever gear and the gear stick needs a dose of the blue pill. Its not stiff in gear.
I had this problem on my old mazda and it was the ball seat and bellows. These sit under the gear stick and have nothing to do with the gearbox or the operation of the box. This is also no to much of a tricky job and should take no more than 2 hours. These tend to be dealer only parts.

hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
Forgot to mention the leak. This tends to happen to most 480's without their owners knowing. This is due to a little crap plate that sits on the gearbox. This collects crap and any oil that it may loose. 9 times of 10 the cause of this leak is only a copper sealing washer on the drain plug. These cost only pence
hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
epilogue........sloppy gear change sorted!!!
a very nice mechanic replaced the missing bush and sleeve in the gear selector linkage.......and a bolt that was in down side up and causing difficult rear gear selection...I'm a happy bunny
