Gearbox oil leak

Post by Ally » Tue Sep 20, 2005 6:40 pm

After following Vader back from Skegness I seem to have developed a bit of a transmission leak! :-(

Thing is, I only noticed it after the car had been sitting in my drive all night and it had left a little line of spots of gearbox oil where it had been dripping off the underside of the car.

There's no obvious leaks to be seen but I think it must be coming from the nearside of the diff. Could it just be that on the 240 mile run home the gearbox was running hotter than normal and this caused the leak, or do you think I've got something I need to worry about?

Haynes tells you about an oil seal on the right hand driveshaft and how to change it, but nothing about the left hand shaft...

Any help or suggestions will be much appreciated!

That's not very good. Seems like a lot of 480 are dropping dead after Vader got close to them.

Blinky got back here with a ECU fault code saying the air temp sensor was duff.

The left driveshaft doesn't have a seal. The gearbox oil is kept in the box by the driveshaft gaiter (rubber boot thing). If it starts to leak all of the gearbox oil can come out. A lot of renault boxes die this way. Renault (and i imagine volvo) can press a new gaiter on the driveshaft for not to much money.

Thanks Bramdeman, that sounds like a likely suspect - I'll go and investigate today...
