Bang sound when accelerating, is it the Universal Joints?

Both manual and automatic transmission are discussed here, including the clutch!

Bang sound when accelerating, is it the Universal Joints?

Post by Matthew Brennan » Tue Jun 21, 2005 6:06 pm

Just recently I have been hearing a dull Thud/Bang when i acclerate whilst turning a corner. Most often it's when I pull away quickly and to the right but it does happen while i'm driving sometimes too. It does it in any gear although ususaly in 1st

My mate at work said it was most probably the u.v. joint on the drive shaft.

Does anyone here have any idea's? Also does anyone know a rough price of the offending item and can I get a reconditioned one or simmilar cheaper?

Thanks in advance....

Ummm that sounds like the problem I had with my Mazda 323, a knocking whenever I turned right and when I accelerated from standing, It turned out to be a knackered CV joint.

More than likely...

You can buy replacememnt CV joints and fit them yourself. Cheapest option is to get a whole driveshaft from a scrapper.

Grab a new driveshaft of a scrapyard - I paid £30 for a pair of them about a year ago, and both where in good nick.

To replace them, you'll need a hefty extension bar (about 1m of scaffold pole will do the job) for your socket set to get the driveshaft bolt off the offending wheel, and (if memory serves) a ball joint seperator and a drift/punch if you're on the right hand driveshaft. Haynes, for once, gives a pretty good description of the job, although I think they recommend taking off the lower wish-bone to completely remove the hub, which I don't think is necessary, as the hub will pivot away from the drive shaft once you've taken it off the upper strut and the steering ball-joint if you play you're cards right.
Repack everything with the right amount of packing grease - and shove some Moybedium grease on the drive-shaft splines and you're away!
Its a nice Saturday job if you're handy with a spanner and its sunny :)
Good luck

On each of the driveshafts their is a joint with a rubber around it. Thats it.

If it makes noise when you turn right its the left shaft and visa versa. Usually its easy to tell wich one is broken becouse most of the time the rubber part is broken wich allowed dirt and stuff to get in the joint and kill it in the first place.
