My new box

Post by SanPhire » Sun Apr 17, 2005 5:45 pm

I've recently had a re-conditioned box put in
Just slowly working it in and today was the first jaunt to the motorway.

80mph is now achieved at around 500revs lower than before.
3000rpm = 72mph in 5th.

The box that came off had a renault badge stamped on it (urgh) - while it was the same casing - could it have had different shorter ratios inside?

Where there any ratio differences in the M50 box between engines/models?

Yep, the boxes go from M53 in an 87-89ES, to M54 for the F and G plate turbo's (which broke), M59 for the 1990-on turbo (volvo's stronger version), and M60 for the 2.0litre.

All have different ratios.

Think there may have been others too.

The gearboxes from Volva are inside different from the Renault ones.
Also there are tree differennt final ratios.
Two for Europe without France and one extra for France.
The ratios are 3,73 for the turboversions and the two liter
and 4.07 for the normal 1,7 ES .
The is or should be a small tab on the gearbox that gives informatien about this
it says M ?? 373
or M?? 407

?? is for the number M50 to M60

Chears for the info!
Will check that next time i'm in the engine bay (not long if I know my car!)
I'm enjoying the new box though - the longer ratios give a much better motorway ride and an improved fuel economy (I'm a student - this is a very good thing)
