AWD conversion
for all you techies again......
thinking about maybe doing an AWD conversion......
looking at maybe fitting the MTX75 transverse box...would have to modify it to fit of course, and then replace the back axle with something.
are there any easier ways of doing this...ie are any of the other AWD volvos transverse mounted?
has anyone ever heard of gearboxes with a PTO output on the back, to drive the rear axle? (personally i wouldnt, but ive heard rumours!!)
how hard could it be???

i think 300 rear axles would be as usefull as original, coz they don't have differential in it. and they have leaf springs. better use a dana sort of axle..

i think a 700 rear axel will do the trick better.
but the problem is how to get the shaft there
there is no room for a shaft underneath the 480
what to do with the tank
or how to get the shifting working
and where to put the exhaust
usefull item cud be a alfa 33 4x4 gearbox
thats a original frontwheel drive but wit an add-on its 4x4

hmmm,
What about a second engine?
Perhaps a awd from Renault Kangoo 4wd will work or perhaps the 4wd system of a Peugeot 405 or Citroen BX will fit.
You dont want a live axle though. An de Dion axle would be nice.
Or buy an Impreza

I too would like AWD... driving about today I could accelerate faster if I didn't end up wheelspining in third.
The PTO from the box is easy enough, costly... but not so hard. Get a bearing housing made and cut a hole in the side of the dif housing, then a gear made to take power from the dif.
A Honda CRV dif will fit at the rear of the car without removing anything, as it's turned through 90 degrees compared to most (so it's very shallow). You would need to make the front gear to match the rpm to the ratio, and give the drive distribution requred.
Prop shaft..... God only knows where it can go

gear rpm matching wouldn't be enough, what you have to do is drive rear axle through slippery clutch (haldex) or make a central diff.

MTX gear box is what is used on a lot of rally cars as far as im aware....quaife do em cheap enough....they even do a seperate bell housing to matc any engine, so matching the box to block isnt hard (costly, but not hard)
its a transverse box, with a seperate ratio matched output for the rear wheels, giving something like 64:36 ratio back:front (just from memory...not sure if exact)
am very dubious about going the PTO route....i though they spun at a specific rpm? if so, would, as been stated need some kind of gearbox type thing in between pto/rear axle? (4wd transfer box?)
prop shaft isnt hard either....company near me will make a full prop, carbon composite, so light, for about 50 quid...again, can have it to match any plate either end.
run the prop straight up the hand brake tunnel...maybe need abit of welding doing there...not hard...cut a tunnel out of some other rwd car an weld in....hand brake cable could be routed anywhere really...maybe put it as a 'pull' on the dash somewhere? (under steering column?)
petrol tank...lift into the boot....boot aint much use....never carry the space saver wheel...could lift the floor high enough to put the tank in there...isnt i a GRP tank anyway?? have another one fab'ed to fit where ever.
i really like the idea of awd...i think the car deserves it....especially if mr pruen is giving the engine so much welly!
(ps martin....am looking at a turbo this weekend )

if you wanna sell yours for a couple of hundred quid then i will look gaz!!
dont want a pristine one, as its gonna get ripped to shit anyway...am planning on doing to a turbo everything i was gonna do to mi 480 S, but as they dont seem to be that tuneable, i may as well spend the cash on a turbo!
didnt think youd sell your turbo gaz?????
