Major problem..gearbox?....any ideas?

Post by johnd » Wed Dec 15, 2004 1:20 pm

Hi,

A while ago I had a knocking sound that disappeared when I pressed the clutch down and suspected that it was the input bearing. It seemed to go away and I kind of forgot about it. Well, this morning I accelerated away from some lights and hit about 5000rpm and changed to second. There is now a god awful vibration coming from the engine and you can see it moving back and forth. there is also a slight metallic ticking noise aswell. All gears engage fine and the car runs fine apart from the vibration.

Input bearing gone? Any ideas?

I'm taking it in to be looked at tomorrow but would appreciate some ideas. Also anyone know the rough cost of getting, say, the input bearing replaced?

Just what you want before christmas!!!

Cheers

see if you havent sheared your rear engine mount (theres only 1), specially if your pulling away at 5000 revs

done that before,

put your handbreak on, lean out of the door and look underneath when you release the clutch slightly to biting point, does the exhaust move up & down?

if you get a frind to look in the engine bay whilst you do it the whole engine tips over, very scary/impressive

thing the mount was about 50 notes new, but a pig to fit

sound to me like the rear engine mount. What year is your car?

If you the mk2 rear engine mount the mount itself will most probley be fine but the bracket is most probley fucked. This is due to the bracket being made too thin. If you buy a new one from the dealers 25 pound it is now twice as thick.

It is quite hard to fit if you only have the basic tools.

P.S. Check your power steering fluid out as i have seen it before it breaks the power steering pipe. If this has happened its not all that bad.

Is it noisier in any particular gear? Hope for your sake it's not the teeth removing themself from gears themself!

Doesn't sound like input bearing probs.

If you need to do the bearing ever, might as well do the clutch at the same time. The bearing on it's own is only about £10, whole clutch set about £120, but for the work involved, do the lot.

I'll go with the engine mount idea also. But why would you have a ticking sound??

Or maybe something has broken / come loose on the clutch itself. Or something has been dropped into the clutch housing as i've done before! Would upset the flywheel balance...

Fuckin cars eh?

Yep....bastard clutch has gone!!!

Got to get it replaced and gearbox service for £340 on Monday. Seems a bit steep but there should be fitting a borg clutch so at least it will be a goodun. Am tempted to fit a racing clutch though to make absolutely certain.

I have just done this job. Make sure they put the correct gearbox oil in is my advice. It didn't cost me that much. lol. In fact i could do it with a clutch from volvo for less than that. Clutch from volvo is 130pounds + vat. I got the same clutch even had volvo stamped on it but came in a different coloured box for 85 pounds all in. :D Then just to finish the job new bolts from volvo and a lightened and skimmed flywheel
